Dr. Michele Saraiva Carilo, Coordinator of OSU's Portuguese Language Program, has received a Virtual Exchange Global Teaching and Learning Grant from the Office of International Affairs, Drake Institute for Teaching and Learning, and Office of Technology and Digital Innovation.
With this grant support, Saraiva Carilo will organize, design, and deliver an 8-week online course which will offer theoretical, pedagogical, and intercultural background related to Brazil to OSU students pursuing a degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL).
The course, slated to be offered in 2023, will consist of 4 modules: 1) Theoretical underpinnings on TESOL within Brazilian language-in-education policies; 2) TESOL-related pedagogical approaches and methodologies applied to speakers of Brazilian Portuguese; 3) Intercultural competence and language learning and teaching; and 4) Brazilian cultural and linguistic contexts beyond policy and societal standardizations.
The course will feature guest lectures by experts, schoolteachers, and stakeholders in international TESOL. Students will also be offered the opportunity to remotely observe English as a Foreign Language classes to learn about the connections between policy or theory and the realities of teaching.
