Teach the Andes K-12 Repository is now live!

For the past several months, The Center for Latin American Studies (CLAS) has been developing a web page on our site dedicated to resources that can be used for K-12 education. We are excited to announce that this page is finally live and available for the public to view!

Utilizing an interdisciplinary approach to teaching and studying the region, these resources will provide a critical understanding of the Andes in dynamic terms that bridge past and present, modern and traditional, emphasizing processes of continuity and transformation and developing a comprehensive appreciation for the relevance of the region today. This applied perspective, moreover, places the humanities in productive dialogue with the arts and sciences. In this sense, teaching the Andes becomes a model that is generative of innovative approaches to K-12 education more broadly.

CLAS Curriculum Development Grants

CLAS has opened a call for curriculum development proposals about topics related to Latin America from current faculty affiliates. If you are interested in submitting a grant proposal, please see the details below.

As part of its Title VI Comprehensive National Resource Center funding from the International and Foreign Language Education division of the U.S. Department of Education, the Center for Latin American Studies (CLAS) seeks proposals for Curriculum Development Grants, which are available to any Ohio State faculty affiliate who wishes to apply for funding to create new courses at Ohio State with an emphasis on Latin America, or design curricular modules to be used as a resource for K12 students or for instructors at the K12 or community college level.

Up to $2,000 is available for curricular modules and up to $3,000 is available for new course development. Funds can be used to support faculty supplemental compensation, hire graduate/undergraduate student assistants, and purchase materials as a research supplement.

The deadline to submit a proposal is September 1, 2020.

Job Posting: Substitute Teaching

Grandview Heights Schools is immediately seeking a long term substitute for a Grade 4-12 Spanish teacher. This position will begin August 11th and is anticipated to last through December 2020. Applicants affiliated with the Educational Service Center of Central Ohio are preferred. ODE licensure for Spanish K-12 is required. Acceptable Ohio and FBI background checks required.

Women in the World: Global Poverty, Gender, & Race

Around the world women and girls are disproportionately affected by poverty. Globally, women are less likely to own land, receive a secondary education, have access to a banking institution, and in low income communities, maternal mortality rates skyrocket. These statistics are even higher for women of color. Moreover, this inequality has only been further highlighted by the recent impacts of the global pandemic, Covid-19. And yet, it has been proven that investing in women and girls is beneficial to the economy and society overall. Despite these correlations, it's projected that global gender equality will not be reached for another 108 years.

To help us understand the challenges to global gender equality, especially in-light of Covid-19, the Columbus Council on World Affairs has invited Gayle Smith to lead us in a discussion around this very important topic. The discussion will be held September 1, from 12-1 PM, on Zoom.
