CLAS is hiring an Outreach Coordinator!

This full-time position works closely with CLAS Assistant Director to design activities that increase knowledge and understanding of Latin America on campus and in the community.

Primary responsibilities: organizing conferences, workshops, cultural events and lectures; facilitating linkages with community colleges, local K-12 educators and institutions; coordinating K-12 teacher training workshops, and building relationships with the local community. Celpe-Bras Exam

Quer comprovar sua proficiência em Língua Portuguesa?

The Center for Languages, Literatures and Cultures (CLLC), in collaboration with the Dept. of Spanish and Portuguese and Center for Latin American Studies, is now offering the Celpe-Bras exam. The CLLC is certified by the Brazilian Department of Education (Ministério de Educação e Cultura-MEC) and the National Institute for Research in Education (Instituto Nacional de Estudos e Pesquisas Educacionais Anísio Teixeira-INEP) to administer Celpe-Bras, the official Brazilian Portuguese Proficiency exam for non-native speakers of Brazilian Portuguese. The Ohio State University is the first Big Ten School to offer this exam.

OAS Internship Program

The Organization of American States (OAS) is the main political forum of the region that promotes and supports democracy, human rights, security and integral development in the Americas. The OAS seeks to prevent conflicts and to bring political stability, social inclusion and prosperity to the region through dialogue and collective action. This Decoloniality

This Decoloniality is a reading group and hands-on workshop in decolonial theory and practice for students and faculty in the arts and humanities. It aims to interrogate core conceptual and instrumental objectives of decolonization to repatriate Indigenous land and life. Meetings will take place on Thursdays from 2-3:30pm at the Graduate Reading Room (038L), Fine Arts Library.

Student Highlight

A fourth-year PhD student in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, Luana Lamberti, is doing a fieldwork in Helvécia, an Afro-Brazilian community in Bahia this summer. "I am learning about the community's cultural expressions and language. They are a recognized maroon society with a rich cultural background." Lamberti's research interests are in Hispanic linguistics and Afro-varieties of Brazilian Portuguese and Spanish. She will be the president of the Brazilian Student Association (BRASA) this year, she served as vice president of the student organization during the 2018-2019 school year.

Graduate Fellowship Presentations

Mi idioma, mi comunidad: español para bilingües

Mi idioma, mi comunidad: español para bilingües, is an open-access textbook for Heritage Language Learners of Spanish that centers on students' experiences with language, identity, and belonging in the Midwest through real-world applications. It uses a project-based approach that outlines how students engage in real-life applications by exploring culturally relevant topics in language use, arts, festivals, food, ethnography, oral history, digital lives, and the university. Through multimedia such as podcasts, videos, neighborhood maps, and music, it promotes interactive exploration of culturally relevant content while supporting students' language maintenance and growth.

AATSP Spanish Immersion Weekend

Ohio AATSP 2019 Immersion weekend will be held at Deer Creek Lodge and Cabins. All Spanish teachers or teachers of other languages who speak Spanish are welcome to register!
