Area Studies Centers announce Diversity Speaker Series

As part of the Area Studies Centers' Diversity Speakers Series, CLAS is co-hosting a webinar with the Center for Latin American Studies at the University of Arizona on Nov. 4. We invite Dr. Antonio Bacelar da Silva, Assistant Professor in Brazil Studies and Linguistic Anthropology, to present his talk, Antiblackness, racial violence, and a report on teaching “Black Lives Matter across the Americas”. He will describe the magnitude of antiblackness, explore why antiblackness helps explain how we got here, describe how he approaches the topic in his course "Black Lives Matter across the Americas" at the University of Arizona, and have an informal conversation about ways for moving forward in antiracist education.

ODI's 4-part workshop series on Ohio Immigrants and Refugees

The Office of Diversity and Inclusion (ODI), in partnership with Advocates for Basic Legal Equality, Inc. (ABLE) and The Ohio Immigrant Alliance, has announced a 4-part virtual workshop series on Ohio Immigrants and Refugees: Lived Experiences, Mobilizing for Change. This series will convene throughout the month of October and feature guest panelists and keynote speaker Daniela Pierre-Bravo, TV producer for MSNBC's "Morning Joe."

Global One Health Day 2020 Conference-Call for Abstracts

The Global One Health Day 2020 Conference (Nov. 5-7) will surround Strengthening Global Resilience Through One Health: A 2020 Vision for a Sustainable Future. The emergence of COVID-19 pandemic caused by SARS-CoV-2 virus illustrates the need for continued and expanded intersectoral collaboration and knowledge to meet emerging threats. This conference aims to highlight the need for strengthened training, research and outreach capacity to address complex issues pertinent to human, animals, plants and the environment, foster collaboration for effective and sustained capacity building/strengthening, and showcase the diverse projects GOHi and global partners are working on to make an impact around the world.

The organizing committee is now accepting abstracts. Interested students, post-docs and early-career researchers/faculty are invited to submit. Abstracts are limited to 300 words and must report the results of original research pertinent to the subject matter. Abstracts related to session themes will be prioritized, but all One Health-related topics will be considered. Abstracts must be submitted by October 2.

Critical Language Scholarship 2021 Application Now Open!

Applications are now being accepted for the U.S. Department of State’s Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program for intensive language study abroad in summer 2021. The CLS Program is a fully-funded intensive overseas language and cultural immersion program for U.S. undergraduate and graduate students enrolled at U.S. colleges and universities. Students spend eight to ten weeks abroad studying one of 15 critical languages, Portuguese included. Applications are due Tuesday, November 17, 2020 by 8:00pm EST.

Pachaysana Workshop Series- Epistemic Justice Workshop #1

The first workshop in the Epistemic Justice Workshop Series will take place on October 2 from 9:30-11 AM. From the perspective of "voice", participants will work on poetry/spoken word activities and will move from the individual to the collective voice, demonstrating the importance of radical listening in epistemic justice.

Although it is encouraged, you do not need to participate in every workshop of the series. See below a full list of workshop sessions:
