April 2026

Greetings!

What an exciting season it is for all of us here at CLCL! We are counting down the days until our team departs for Kenya on May 19, and we could not be more eager to reconnect with the children, families, and communities that make this work so meaningful. But before we go, we need your help.

Sponsored Children’s Day is just around the corner, and we are still raising the funds needed to make it a celebration these kids will never forget. Your generous gift — no matter the size — goes directly toward creating a day of joy, belonging, and hope for children who need it most.

This issue is packed with stories straight from the heart of our mission. Get an inside look at what a typical day looks like for our dedicated CLCL workers in the field — the early mornings, the challenges, and the moments that make it all worthwhile. We are also shining a spotlight on two remarkable children whose stories will inspire and amaze you. Both are a testament to what is possible when a community rallies around a child. One of these young lives is still waiting for a sponsor — and that sponsor could be you.

Thank you, as always, for standing with us. None of this happens without you

Kenya Trip 2026: We're Going Back!

The excitement is building — a team of 11 is heading to Kenya on May 19th, and we can hardly wait!

Our group is coming together from across the United States, and we are thrilled to welcome one traveler all the way from Australia. Together, we will spend over a week on the ground in Kenya, pouring into the lives of the children and communities we love so dearly.

Nairobi: Mathare

Our first stop will be Mathare, the informal settlement in Nairobi, where we sponsor two children. This vibrant but deeply impoverished community holds a special place in our hearts, and we look forward to connecting with the families there. While in Mathare, we will also host a Ruby Cup training for young mothers—an empowering event that provides women with the tools and education they need to thrive. Of course, we will once again be giving our youngest Mathare friends handmade yarn dolls, which have caused much joy on past visits!

Meru: Our Sponsored Children

From Nairobi, we will travel to Meru, where much of our work is centered. This is where the joy really overflows! We will be meeting with our sponsored children and delivering gifts from sponsors and generous donors — moments that remind every child just how seen and loved they truly are.

We will also have the privilege of visiting some of the homes where our children live, giving us a deeper understanding of their daily lives and the challenges their families face.

School Visits & Field Days

Our team will visit all four of the schools where we provide food support — a vital program that helps keep children healthy, focused, and in the classroom. And this year, we are doing something brand new: for the first time ever, we will be hosting field days at three of the schools! These celebrations will be a wonderful opportunity for the children to play, laugh, and feel celebrated.

Stay Connected

We are so eager to reunite with our Kenyan friends and children. Be sure to follow us on Facebook and Instagram for photos and updates from the trip as they happen — you will not want to miss a moment!

Please keep our team in your prayers as we prepare for this incredible journey.

Make a Child Feel Seen This Sponsored Children's Day

Every year, Sponsored Children’s Day is a moment of pure joy — a day when children in our program feel the warmth of knowing someone, somewhere, cares about them. This year, our attendees will help to mentor the children, play games with them, dine with them, and give them backpacks full of surprises!

Send a Card. Brighten a Day.

Not every sponsored child receives a card from their sponsor on Sponsored Children’s Day. If you’d like to make sure no child feels forgotten, consider sending a generic card that we can deliver on your behalf to children who don’t hear from their sponsor. A few kind words can mean the world to a child who rarely receives any mail at all.

Give the Gift of Dignity

For just $50, you can give a sponsored child in Kenya a celebration they will never forget—and items that will change their daily lives. Each $50 gift provides:

  • 🍽️ A warm lunch — for many children, a rare treat
  • 🎒 A backpack filled with essential toiletries like soap, toothbrushes, and toothpaste
  • 💡 A solar lamp — bringing light to homes without electricity
  • 🧦 Five pairs of underwear — a basic necessity that most vulnerable children in Kenya simply do not have

It may surprise you to learn that something as fundamental as underwear is out of reach for many of the children we serve. For a child who has never owned their own pair, this gift is not a small thing — it is a profound act of care and dignity.

Why This Matters

Kenya’s most vulnerable children face daily hardships that are difficult to imagine. Many go without basic hygiene supplies, study in the dark after sunset, and lack clothing essentials that most of us take for granted. Sponsored Children’s Day is our opportunity to close that gap — even just for a moment — and show every child that they are valued, loved, and worthy of celebration.

How to Give

Your donation of $50 — or any amount — goes directly toward making Sponsored Children’s Day a memorable and meaningful experience for the children who need it most.

A Day at CLCL-Kenya!

Prepared by: Wyclif Gitonga

At Changing Lenses, Changing Lives-Kenya (CLCL-Kenya), each day starts with a commitment to support sponsored children and their families, no matter their location or the challenges faced.

Mornings often begin with updates from the schools, and other times from the parents/guardians to the sponsored children. These messages highlight children who may have missed school, are struggling academically or emotionally, or whose families are facing new hardships. These insights help shape the day’s priorities. Financial statements are reviewed daily to ensure that school fees, medical needs for the sponsored children, and essential supplies are provided on time. Every decision in the office is deliberate, balancing urgency with sustainability, because behind each allocation is a child who relies on consistency and trust.

As the day goes by, work moves into the field, where the real challenges begin. Many of the schools and homes CLCL supports live in remote villages of Meru, or crowded informal settlements around Nairobi, where public transportation is scarce or nonexistent. During the rainy season, roads become muddy and impassable, while during the dry and sunny months, long distances, dust, and heat make travel physically demanding. In many cases, the only available option is traveling by motorcycle, often an unsafe mode of transport, carrying up to three passengers at a time without any safety gear. These journeys are never easy, but they are often the only way to reach our children who might otherwise remain unhelped.

When CLCL-Kenya staff visit homes, their priority is building understanding and connection. They sit with caregivers, listen to concerns, and observe living conditions, transforming donor support into real, human care. These visits ensure that support provided is based on lived realities rather than assumptions. Later in the day, attention turns back to schools. Conversations with teachers provide insight into academic progress, behavior, and emotional well-being. Children who need additional mentorship, learning materials, or encouragement are identified and followed up on. Sometimes a short conversation is enough to restore confidence; other times, a lot of support over weeks or months is needed. All information gathered by the CLCL-Kenya staff is carefully documented to ensure no child is unnoticed.

As evening approaches, updates are recorded, reports completed and shared with the CLCL-US respondent, and follow-ups planned. Though much of this work happens in silence, it underpins CLCL’s commitment to integrity and impact. A day at CLCL-Kenya is more than a checklist of tasks, but a series of choices to persevere despite difficult roads, unpredictable weather, and a lack of reliable means of transport. Because of your support, children remain in school, families feel supported, schools receive food support, young mothers receive menstrual cups, and our community grows stronger. Collectively, we are all transforming lives, one at a time!

Success Story: Wendy

Prepared by: Wyclif Gitonga

Wendy is a 13 year old girl, the second-born in a family of five children, and the first daughter in two sets of twins. She is currently in the 7th grade at one of the top junior high schools with her other siblings. Her childhood has been marked by challenges that would have easily crushed her dreams. Her father worked as a casual laborer at a local primary school, but his income was barely enough to sustain the family. Then tragedy struck in 2021 when he passed away while Wendy was in grade 2, leaving the family in even deeper hardship. In addition, her mother is sickly and unable to do manual work to provide for the children.

At her family’s lowest moment, CLCL stepped in to sponsor Wendy, easing their suffering. Through this support, Wendy and her siblings received food, school fees, uniforms, bedding, and other essentials. What once seemed impossible became reality: Wendy remained in school, her siblings learned alongside her, and the family faced each day with renewed hope.

But her sponsorship with CLCL has done more than meet basic needs; it has inspired Wendy to believe in herself. With her self-esteem boosted, she has blossomed both in class and beyond. Recently, she joined her school’s rugby team, where she discovered her strength and athleticism. Against all odds, Wendy and her teammates fought their way to the Meru County semifinals among various junior high school teams, a victory that filled her with pride and showed her that she can achieve greatness.

Wendy’s story shows the power of support we witness at CLCL. What began as help in a crisis has become the foundation of her inspiration. Today, she walks with confidence, knowing she is not alone and that her future holds promise. Her journey is now defined not by loss, but by courage, hope, and determination.

Sponsor a child - Roy

Prepared by: Fridah Makandi

At just 17 years old, Roy is already known for his responsibility and dedication. Currently in 11th grade at one of Meru’s top schools, he balances his studies with responsibilities at home, always stepping up to help his family. His favorite subject is agriculture, not just because he excels at it, but because he dreams of one day using it to transform his community.

Roy’s path has been far from easy. Abandoned at birth by his father, he was raised by his single mother, whose resilience is nothing short of inspiring. The mother could not afford necessities, such as food or quality education for her two sons. After staying for a long time without support from her husband, she returned to her mother’s home, where she was relying on relatives and irregular casual jobs to keep her children fed. Due to poverty, Roy and his elder brother were on the verge of dropping out of school, since their mother could not earn enough to pay their school fees.

Fortunately, in 2017, everything changed when Roy was identified as CLCL’s sponsorship program beneficiary. Through CLCL sponsorship, Roy’s family found relief from the constant fear of hunger, relocation, and unpaid school fees. For Roy, sponsorship meant more than just a uniform or a meal; it meant dignity, stability, and the chance to dream. His mother could finally breathe knowing her son’s education was secure, and Roy could walk into class with confidence, ready to learn. His sponsor ensured that Roy accessed quality education by attending one of the best elementary schools in Meru, from which he performed very well in his 8th-grade examination in preparation for enrolling in high school. It is through his sponsorship that his fees, boarding requirements, and school uniforms were paid, something that his mother would not have been able to pay.

Unfortunately, at the beginning of this year, his sponsor could no longer support Roy due to some unavoidable circumstances. We are worried that the progress he has made, the hope he carries, and the future he envisions now hang in the balance. Without a sponsor, CLCL cannot fully support his education due to limited resources, and his dream of pursuing agriculture is at risk. Roy is determined to succeed. He works hard, he believes in his future, and he knows education is the key to breaking the cycle of struggle his family has endured. We are calling on you to continue the transformative journey from where his sponsor started and support his education. By choosing to sponsor Roy, you are not only keeping him in school, but you are investing in a young man who dreams of cultivating change, feeding communities, and building a brighter tomorrow.
