Volunteering is a great way to meet people, learn new skills, and just give back. CLI helps lots of people volunteer for different project & causes. There are lots of different ways to volunteer. Sometimes it means that people go out and volunteer in the community. Examples of this are when we help OHgo or the Huron County Non-Food Bank. This week's pictures are two groups that volunteered their time inside CLI spaces. The top pictures are of people baking, decorating & boxing valentine's day cookies at Monroeville's UCC for a CLI project that raised more than $400 to support the Free Community Lunch on Fridays at the Norwalk Reservoir Clubhouse.
The bottom right two pictures are from a group working out of 16 West Main to put together a mass mailing for the Norwalk Arts Council.
John's usual--

Well, I don't know about everyone else, but I'm ready for spring, although I'm not caught up on my winter projects yet. No rest for the wicked apparently. Everyone at CLI is really excited to start the new community programming that Tab & Haven have set up. It would be nice to actually get a few 5 day weeks in a row to get some momentum.

Not too much to report otherwise. Making progress on the bowling alley project. There's a temporary railing outside. Custom Metal is fabricating the permanent one. I'm meeting later this spring with the engineer to finalize drawings for the inside downstairs remodel. This is the part where the whole first floor becomes wheelchair accessible-- including the kitchen and a new bathroom that is large enough for people to have help inside. Thanks to generous donations and a bunch of small fundraisers, CLI has enough in our restricted donations account for this part of the renovations. The final piece is the new facade, with a large, accessible entrance. We're still trying to raise the last $50,000 to cover that. So, if anyone has too much money and wants a bowling alley named after them . . .

Stay safe. Lots of ice this winter. Walk carefully. But keep walking.

FAQ of the week:

Q: Why has CLI cancelled programs so much this winter?

A: The short answer is that we get scared about putting a van in the ditch or worse. Many times the main roads aren't that bad, but staying open means picking everyone up on backroads everywhere. When the weather's iffy, it is guaranteed that Holly, Jen & John are texting each other starting at 5:30 am about road conditions, county emergency levels, and local school closings. We hate to close. We know that people count on us and frankly, we can't afford to skip getting paid for the day. The problem is that it's really hard to ignore when every school in the area is closed, even when we think it might have been ok. And-- if we have an accident, we would feel terrible. We feel that we always need to error on the side of safety.

Good Works Cafe
CLI's Good Works Cafe offers a free community lunch every Friday afternoon at the Norwalk Reservoir Clubhouse. Thanks to the generous donations (money & food), CLI is able to take care of our neighbors and also get some real life restaurant and customer service job training.
