Halloween Week 2023!

https://nationaldaycalendar.com/october

Bob put on a concert last week in the HCBDD gym last week & made it very clear which CLI staff he ranks highest. Good thing that the rest of us aren't that sensitive . . .

John's usual--

CLI learned on Friday that we were selected to receive DODD's ADS Quality Improvement grant. We're very excited for 2 reasons. First, we really need the money. The provider reimbursement rates are increasing more than 30% next year, but staying in business all the way through 2023 has been a bit of a squeaker. Even though we've reduced costs and trimmed quite a few services, CLI still provides a lot of services that cost more than the reimbursement we earn. We do it because these are services for which there is no other provider and/or because we don't see the point of staying in business if we can't make _____ happen for a person. The old adage, "no margin, no mission", is true. However, it's also true that the mission is the whole point too. So, we're happy about the grant because of the money. But the second reason that we're excited is about being part of Ohio's effort to improve the lives of people with DD-- helping our clients increase their meaningful participation in their communities and just have the opportunity to have a typical array of choices, like their neigbors without DD. If you're interested in exactly what CLI pledged to do, scroll down to the FAQ portion.

LOTS of bowling last week. Kenilee Lanes hosted League Elementary's entire 4th grade class as well as Norwalk Catholic's 1st grade class. All the leagues are finally rolling, including Wednesday night women's & men's leagues-- both of which are a good time. For those of you hoping to catch an increasingly rare sighting of Jen Swicker-- the Wednesday women's league has had about 50% chances lately. Stop in and have a beer. You might even catch Jen.

We're almost out of the good part of fall. Next comes the rainy cold part that's hard to remember why we all picked Ohio. Daylight's savings time is coming. I am not a fan. I'd rather have the extra hour in the afternoon than in the morning. However, it is a good opportunity to work on whatever personal development goal that you have. It's funny, but when it gets dark an hour earlier, it feels that that's just extra time that you're just waiting for bedtime-- at least for me now that my kids are running amuck on their own (and out of my house). So, I can either watch more TV-- which is not a good choice for me-- or I can work on small personal goals. This winter I picked improving my ability to play guitar & my ability to understand (and maybe even speak) spanish. I'd encourage everyone to think about what you might want to do with the dark days of this coming winter. Time goes quickly and there is so much on TV these days that if you don't have your own agenda, there will always be more to watch.

That's all I have. Pay attention to the weather forecast & dress accordingly. Keep those hands clean. We're definitely heading into flu & cold season. Have a great week!

John

Question of the week

Q: What did CLI say that we would do if DODD awarded us one of the ADS pilot grants?

A: CLI pledged to do these things if we were chosen for this grant:

  • Expand our after-hours & weekend community-integrated ADS for people who are community employed. Historically people have quit competitive employment to return to sheltered employment because they are lonely and miss their friends. We believe that we need to broaden supports to better support people's ambitions to work in the community. People shouldn't have to pick between having a real job or having an active social life.
  • Offer a "braided" service of community ADS + remote supports and will actively promote those services to young people transitioning from high school to ensure that they are aware of this resource. CLI believes that it's important that we divert young people away from traditional 9a-3p day services. Often families naturally enroll in these programs because they are unaware of other options. We believe that enrolling young people into traditional day services is counter productive to that individual's long term independence and success.
  • Invest in providing more comprehensive computer and application training to individuals with DD, including social media. We'll also work to coordinate methods of improving individual's online access around literacy barriers and make sure that every one of our spaces has a public access computer that our clients can access with or without staff assistance.
  • Work collaboratively with other Ohio providers who also want to improve quality outcomes for people in their ADS programs.
