with Artists Open Studio!

John's usual--

We've got a few fun activities coming up. On 6/21 our friends at the All Ports Yacht Club in Venetian Harbor will be sponsoring their annual Friday Boat Trip. This is a fun day where we all go out in small groups on individual APYC member boats for an hour on Sandusky Bay. Then they treat us to a great picnic lunch in their clubhouse. They even give us all swag bags to take back with us on our way out. It's a good time. Unfortunately this trip is not wheelchair accessible, so if someone uses a wheelchair and wants to get for a boat ride, we'll have to make that happen another day. We have resources to help people who use wheelchairs get out on the water, so make sure we know that you want to go.

We will also be sailing this summer with our friends at the Sandusky Sailing Club and Sandusky Junior Sailors-- so if sailing is more your speed-- let us know. In the past this group has run a great adaptive sailing program that has helped people in wheelchairs sail. The volunteer who led that aspect of the adaptive sailing program is back this year after being away for a few years, so fingers crossed!

CLI just launched our THRIVE in community employment program with special activities that are specifically for people who are holding down day jobs in the community. One of these is a "Thursday Date Night" option (but you have to invite your own date, it's not that kind of escort service). In all seriousness, it doesn't have to be a romantic date. It's just an opportunity for people to get out with 1 other friend. On Friday evening and during the day on Saturday, we're offering opportunities for small groups of friends to go to a sporting event, take in a movie, etc. If this sounds good to you, get in touch with Haven ASAP and reserve your spot.

CLI's first Cornhole tournament is coming up in a few weeks. I hope to see you join us on Friday, June 28th! Have a great week.CLI

We spend a lot time participating in classes at Norwalk's Ernsthausen Rec Center, but we also really enjoy just messing around on the court. It's a great resource when the weather is too hot or cold or rainy!

Thanks to the DODD ADS Quality Pilot Grant, CLI has a whole fresh new curriculum around technology and social media training-- including a lending library of 5G iPads that people enrolled in these classes can sign out and take home! Tell Haven in you want to learn more.

Roxanne & Grace are putting together LOTS of Cedar Point Trips. Don't be shy if you want to go!

Question of the week

Q: How does CLI get money to operate?

A: CLI has 4 primary income streams as of 2024. Approximately 63.5% of the money we make and spend comes from the services that we provide to people with developmental disabilities. 28% comes from everything that Firelands Local does (shredding, recycling, shredding assembly, temporary labor, etc.). Kenilee Lanes Bowling Center generates about 7%. The remaining 1.5% is generated by renting out our spaces, primarily 16 West Main Street.

Those numbers above don't include special grant funds. In typical years our grant revenue doesn't amount to even 1% of our overall revenues, but we're excited when we are able to land grants because they are almost always an opportunity to do something that we otherwise couldn't afford to do. It's taken every single dollar from every single place we could squeeze it out of to help us make it through the past 3 years.

Thankfully, we've successfully made it around the corner and are back on solid footing and able to begin expanding our services again.

Ensuring Equal Access to Benefits Counseling to Maximize Community Inclusion

Webinar Date: June 11, 2024  |  Time: 3:00 pm to 4:30 pm ET

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court’s landmark Olmstead decision. The Disability Employment TA Center will celebrate the Olmstead anniversary milestone with a webinar focused on ensuring equal access to financial education resources and benefits counseling for people with disabilities searching for employment. During the webinar, the panel will discuss how people with disabilities and their families can access tools for financial education through Centers for Independent Living (CIL). The panel will also share how state agencies, Hispanic and Latino community organizations, and the local Association of People Supporting Employment First (APSE) chapter in Colorado partnered on benefits counseling outreach to help maximize community inclusion and independent living for people with disabilities.
