There's a fair amount of consternation among providers right now because it's a bit unclear how DODD's provider compliance team will hold providers accountable to this settings rule. There's a bit of debate about interpretation. The main takeaway is that activities for people with DD should be typical with and integrated into the general public. Part of CLI's initiative to offer services later in the afternoon, evenings, and weekend is that's when those community settings are typically accessed by non-retirement age people.
For now, CLI is ahead of this curve. We are providing services in community settings and actively trying to maximize real integration & membership as much as possible. We would still like to see more afterhours and weekend activities authorized, especially for people who have community jobs. Physical wellness and maintaining strong social ties with friends are huge when it comes to ensuring lifelong independence.
We'll keep you posted as this develops. In the meantime, enjoy this still somewhat warm November weather. Keep those hands clean!
