John's usual--
Just a quick note this week. I'm short on time because I spent the weekend visiting my daughter at college. She's doing great & I'm proud of her. However, it did make me think about what the DD system should be doing to help families of kids with developmental disabilities. Specifically, those parents need help their kids identify and plan toward their unique ambitions. I know in my family we started pushing our kids to think about what they wanted and then we helped them identify pathways based on the resources we had to work with. I worry that we're asking parents of kids with developmental disabilities to do an impossible task because we aren't educating them about the resources they'll have to work with in the adult services world.. There is a huge difference in what services look like post-graduation, but parents often don't find that out until the year their child matriculates.
So, please share the flyer below for the the 12/2 Bowling/Advocacy party. We've also started a new facebook page for local kids on IEPs so that parents can share information. That link is here:

We've left the Q&A from last week about the HCBDD Levy next month. I know that I've gotten a lot of questions and suggestions about how I might change the wording on the levy signs-- so it seems like it might be worth a repeat. The super short version of is that even though CLI is no longer part of the "Christie Lane" (formally known as the Huron County Board of DD)-- we support this levy. Providers like CLI are paid with a combination of federal Medicaid dollars and local tax dollars. Without the local tax dollars, Ohio and Huron County couldn't pull down those federal dollars. HCBDD depends on your vote.
Enjoy this last week of October!
