Are you on CLI's newsletter email list?  Click here to sign up!

The Ernsthausen Recreation center has been a really good partner to CLI.  We've had the opportunity to participate in lots of different fitness classes and have made some pretty special connections so far.

Nolberto is always game for a new experience.  Last week he & Tammy were hamming it up in the "Move & Groove" classroom.

John's usual--

Just a quick note this week. I'm short on time because I spent the weekend visiting my daughter at college. She's doing great & I'm proud of her. However, it did make me think about what the DD system should be doing to help families of kids with developmental disabilities. Specifically, those parents need help their kids identify and plan toward their unique ambitions. I know in my family we started pushing our kids to think about what they wanted and then we helped them identify pathways based on the resources we had to work with. I worry that we're asking parents of kids with developmental disabilities to do an impossible task because we aren't educating them about the resources they'll have to work with in the adult services world.. There is a huge difference in what services look like post-graduation, but parents often don't find that out until the year their child matriculates.

So, please share the flyer below for the the 12/2 Bowling/Advocacy party. We've also started a new facebook page for local kids on IEPs so that parents can share information. That link is here:

We've left the Q&A from last week about the HCBDD Levy next month. I know that I've gotten a lot of questions and suggestions about how I might change the wording on the levy signs-- so it seems like it might be worth a repeat. The super short version of is that even though CLI is no longer part of the "Christie Lane" (formally known as the Huron County Board of DD)-- we support this levy. Providers like CLI are paid with a combination of federal Medicaid dollars and local tax dollars. Without the local tax dollars, Ohio and Huron County couldn't pull down those federal dollars. HCBDD depends on your vote.

Enjoy this last week of October!

John

Question of the week

Q:  I saw that Christie Lane Levy is on the ballot.  Is that CLI?  Do I still need to vote for the levy?

A:  "Christie Lane" is the Huron County Board of DD (HCBDD).  HCBDD does still operate Christie Lane School.  The programs that CLI runs used to also be part of the HCBDD.  However, Ohio's laws changed so that County programs are no longer allowed to operate adult programs, so at the end of 2015, CLI agreed to take them over as a private enterprise.

So-- CLI is completely separate from the Huron County Board of DD (aka the OG "Christie Lane").  BUT-- most of CLI's services (and other provider agencies) are paid for by a combination of federal Medicaid money and local levy dollars.  Other services are 100% paid for using local tax dollars.  Also, HCBDD does still operate Christie Lane School, Early Intervention, Help Me Grow, and a Community Recreation program.  So voting for the levy is still important!
