John's usual--

Last Friday night, CLI hosted our first High School students and parent Bowling Party. Our next one will be Friday evening, December 2nd. The purpose of these is to give kids with disabilities the chance to hang out and just have fun bowling-- while providing an opportunity for parents to learn from one another-- and for CLI to see what we can do to improve the transition from school programs to the adult programs. The two worlds are very different. Students and families need to know what tools they have to work with after graduation-- and we (the system "we") need to get a lot better having really clear planning discussions at student IEP meetings that talk about the challenges that people will face after graduation. CLI regularly meets with young adults that had a 1:1 aide all the way through school with no discussion about what comes next. There are many other aspects of post-school life that parents need a lot more help with. Ohio has a lot of public agency supports that are available, but the systems are often fragmented and if you don't know that a resource is available, it's unlikely that someone will tell you before someone is struggling. This first meeting was productive, although we learned on Friday that the flyers we'd sent to area schools had not been distributed, so this first meeting was relatively small-- maybe just around 20 people. At the group's recommendation, we're going to work on a local Facebook page for the group so that we can communicate directly and have a place to post resources. I want to thank News2You again for helping with this event by sending 3 volunteers to help kids bowl and make pizza. They really made it fun. I'd also like to thank HCBDD for having 2 SSAs on hand to meet with parents and answer questions.

Enjoy the fall weather. Leaves are changing & the bugs are mostly dead. It's a great time to take a walk in the woods.

Well fall is certainly upon us. Many of you realize this because the calendar says so. Some because it was my birthday last week. Ok, maybe only 1 person. Most realize this because of the cooler temperatures. We, Firelands Local, know it is fall because Payne Nickles had there community shred day last Thursday.

As usual, they had a great day. They collected a total of 24,680 pounds of paper. This is the equivalent of an armored car.  The Sandusky office had a total of 11,111 lbs. collected. However, this year Norwalk came out on top with a total of 13,569 lbs. collected.

The efforts of the wonderful associates and the community members that participated helped save 209.78 trees from being harvested.

Firelands Local wants to send a huge thank you to all the associates at both the Norwalk and Sandusky offices for their help with this event.

The pictures show our storage room filled after we collected all material. The other picture is the mountain of boxes created from emptying a portion of the material.

Question of the week

Q:  Now that CLI is no longer part of the Huron County Board of DD (aka "christie lane")-- should I still vote for the tax levy?  Where does that money go?

A:  Yes.  Those levies still need your support.  Local tax levies, like the one that HCBDD has on the ballot this November, are the way that Ohio pays for services for people with DD.  When you vote "yes", that provides operating money for all HCBDD administration and programs.  But some of that money also goes to private providers like CLI.  When we provide services to people, we bill Ohio according to reimbursement rates set in Ohio Administrative Code.  Ohio pays providers by collecting 40% from the local County Board of DD and 60% from federal Medicaid money.  Ohio can't get those federal dollars without getting the local county 40% match first.  So, those local tax levies are just as important as they always have been.  The only difference is that some of that money is distributed to private providers.

October 1st is the last day to register to vote -- click here for more info
