John's usual--

I hope everyone had a fun & safe labor day. Weather after Saturday wasn't great, but it was still a good weekend for us as we were able to do a little sailing on Saturday, catch up with family on Sunday, then enjoy a lazy day around the house yesterday.

There are only 3 weeks left until CLI's 9/24 reverse raffle and I still have LOTS of tickets left. The grand prize is $1000 & tickets are only $25. There are smaller cash prizes as well. All proceeds go directly to CLI and we'll use the money to support programs that aren't otherwise sufficiently funded, such as many of our community employment services. Community jobs are very mission-forward (obviously), but because CLI clients working these jobs are great workers and independent, they need minimal supports, often just transportation & 1 jobsite consultation per month. This makes Individual Employment Supports (IES) efficient from a tax-funded standpoint, but the ala carte and 100% customized nature also means that CLI's costs almost always exceed our reimbursement.

Anyway, the bottom line is that I need HELP selling these raffle tickets! Let me know if you want to buy one-- or even better, you also know 10 friends with cash burning a hole in their pocket!

CLI is looking for people's stories about outcomes that CLI (or another provider) helped you achieve. Ideally these would be tied to goals around community employment, or something that helps increase community membership-- however, it doesn't have to be a big capital letter Goal like that. We just need to promote cool things that people are doing around their own ambitions-- and also demonstrate how we are tapping into community resources to help people reach those goals. Learning to dance, to cook, or anything else is a worthy goal. Likewise, if you want to volunteer around animals or different community groups, those are worthy goals too. The key is that goals should be specific to your ambitions. Simply "exploring the community" isn't enough. CLI and other providers are paid to help you work toward what's important to you-- which is probably different from the the person on either side of you at any given moment. Just because people often have to share supports doesn't usually mean that they have the same personal goals. DODD wants us all to tell more individual success stories.  So-- if CLI has helped you, please let me know so that I can interview you so that others can learn from you about what works-- and what does not work.

That's all I have for this week.  As you can see-- we had 0 video recommendations to share this time around.  This newsletter is more fun for everyone if others contribute stories, pictures & videos.  Help me out!

FAQ(s) of the week:

Q: I've heard that there are new bills being introduced that would eliminate 14c "commensurate wages" for sheltered workshops.  What does this mean for CLI-Firelands Local LLC jobs?

A:  The short answer is-- nothing really.  CLI & Firelands Local LLC have paid at or above Ohio's minimum wage (currently $9.30/hour) since 2016.  We're good as far as this goes.  What CLI's been worrying about is segregation. There are current Ohio laws which make using tax dollars to fund segregated services illegal.  That's why CLI has been trying to mix our traditional stuff-- like employment at the workshop-- with the community integrated stuff.  We think that by leaning into compliance with the new laws, we might be able to hang on to some of the old school services that really help people.  The reality is that people need money and the workshop pays people money that they otherwise wouldn't have.  This fills an immediate need-- but we also should make sure that we don't forget that the long-term goal is always supposed to be a community job.

There were no Video(s) o' the week this week-- but back by popular demand (at least by our friends Libby & Christine at Goodwill is the National Day Calendar rundown of week:
