Week of April 17th, 2023

The guys took advantage of last week's awesome weather to walk out to the Huron Pier before pick-up basketball on the outdoor courts behind McCormick School. We love playing at the Norwalk Rec Center obviously, but it was just way too nice to play under artificial light!

This coming week the highlights from the National Day Calendar site (nationaldaycalendar.com) are:

  • Monday - Crawfish, Cheeseballs, Haikus, Ellis Island & Bats
  • Tuesday - Animal Crackers, Columnists & Linemen
  • Wednesday - Bananas, North Dakota, Amaretto, Garlic, Oklahoma City Bombing Remembrance & Hanging Out
  • Thursday - 420, Get To Know Your Customers, Volunteer Recognition, Cheddar Fries, Pineapple Upside Down Cake, Lima Bean Respect, Look-alikes & High-Fives
  • Friday - Rendering, Clean Out Your Medicine Cabinet, Chocolate Covered Cashews, Yellow Bats & Kindergarten
  • Saturday - Trails, Record Stores, Jelly Beans, Girl Scout Leaders & Earth
  • Sunday - Lost Dogs, Cherry Cheesecake, Take A Chance, Picnics & Talk Like Shakespeare

John's usual--

Starting this week, CLI is finally dropping the masks! From now on it's 100% individual choice whether a particular staff or client feels most comfortable with or without a mask.

On the political front, thanks to state-wide advocacy-- there is reason to believe that the House Finance Committee will recommend significant reimbursement rate increases to DD providers. This is long overdue. With the exception of a single 4% increase that happened at the beginning of 2022, provider reimbursement rates have been capped at the same dollar amounts for the last 2 decades. Unfortunately-- all of the real expenses have doubled or even tripled in that same time span. It is important to keep in mind that this is not just a DD problem. Unsustainable payment rates are the norm for every type of direct care sector-- DD, Home Health, Nursing Homes, etc. Somehow we have to figure to allocate a greater percentage of the money to support the direct care that supports the people that the money has been earmarked for. Change is hard. At any rate, I really appreciate OPRA's leadership in advocating for providers like CLI. It's wonderful to see this issue gaining traction. OPRA stands for Ohio Provider Resource Association and you can learn more about it at OPRA.org.

CLI is working on our special spring & summer programs right now. We've got some fun initiatives in the works, so stay tuned!

Have a great week!

John

Attention: Family Caregivers

The Family Caregiver Survey is for a family member or guardian who provides paid or unpaid caregiving to a family member with intellectual or developmental disabilities who receives supports from a county board of developmental disabilities. The data that you provide will allow the Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities to understand the challenges faced by family caregivers and formulate policies to overcome them. CLI is still running our virtual Bingo--

We're doing it on Thursday afternoons and it is open to anyone, whether at home or another day service provider location. It's a lot of fun and a good way to connect with people that you might not otherwise get to see.

Click here to have the Bingo link emailed to you!

CLI's Good Works Cafe offers a free community lunch every Friday afternoon at the Norwalk Reservoir Clubhouse.

Thanks to the generous donations (money & food), CLI is able to take care of our neighbors and also get some real life restaurant and customer service job training.

If you'd like to learn more or would like to donate to this cause--

Question of the week

Q: When is CLI going to stop making everyone wear masks whenever we ride in a van or a car somewhere?

A: TODAY!!!

CLI's vehicle mask mandate is over. It is now 100% everyone's personal choice whether to mask up or not. Thank you all for being so patient with this policy over the last 2+ years.
