John's usual--
Friday night's cornhole tournament was pretty great. Turn out was really good-- both in terms of the number of teams (15) and in terms of everyone that came out to send Swick off. It was a good time & the weather was perfect, which is saying something given the weather in the days leading up to Friday! As always, we appreciate all the help from N2Y volunteers. This time around N2Y fielded a pretty competitive cornhole team!
Be prepared to be a little patient with us this week as we adjust to life without Jen. We've got a pretty significant hole to fill. And obviously things are always much more fun when Swick's in the thick of it. Fortunately, CLI has excellent people & I know that we'll figure it out. As always, please tell us when you are frustrated so that we for sure know that there's a problem and we can work on fixing it.
In other news, the Huron County Commissioners purchased the workshop building & parking garages. In some ways, this is just a landlord switch for CLI. Instead of Firelands Local writing a check to HCBDD every month, now that payment goes to the Commissioners. However, I think long term this will lead to some bigger changes. For one thing, the Huron County Transit Service will now be part of a larger Seneca-Crawford-Huron County transit system. This means that they will have more vehicles and more drivers to assign to routes-- and hopefully improve everyone's access to community resources. The Commissioners are going to house Huron County's portion of this larger transportation service in the workshop building. It's pretty likely that some other offices will be moved into the workshop building too. The portion that CLI & Firelands Local rents will be only the cafeteria, the workshop floor, the shred room, and the recycling garage. I believe that the more that the workshop building becomes a shared, public space, the better. I think it's important for people to develop casual relationships, which can only happen when you spend time in the same spaces (like work). I also think it would be cool if Firelands Local employees with disabilities got public recognition for the actual real work that they accomplish. I think people have a false idea that people at the workshop are calmly doing slow benchwork for pennies and hour. Everyone who works at the workshop makes at least $10.11 per hour-- and the only way Firelands Local can afford to pay everyone that much is by making sure that the team makes quota. It's real work done by real workers.
Let's hope that the rain is done for a bit. This has been the wettest August that I can remember. Next weekend is Labor Day Weekend, so CLI will be closed next Monday. Have a great week & a great holiday weekend!
