(Left) There's always work to be done at the Humane Society. Lots of people think that they want to work with animals, but don't realize just how much elbow grease goes into this!

(Right) We're glad to be able to help people get back to the Willard Senior Center again. We haven't been able to do this for almost 2 months because we didn't have enough staff. The Center hosts a card-making group that meets weekly to make cards to deliver to shut-ins.

John's usual--

Congratulations James Johnson & Firelands Local LLC for landing an ODNR Grant to purchase a compactor truck to increase the amount of LDPE film (aka "boatwrap") that we recycle. It will probably allow Firelands Local to add more business cardboard recycling accounts too. CLI's former workshop program has really spread it's wing over the last few years and it's been neat to see things like this take off.

There's been a bit more focus around the state on employment lately. It's been 10 years since Ohio officially became an "employment-first" state for people with DD-- but it's kind of been a pretty frenetic decade and we all were trying so hard to achieve so many disparate goals, that I think our collective attention wandered away from the boring work around work.

Earning a paycheck is a huge part of a quality life and many, many important relationships and connections happen at work. I am excited when people find cool jobs and celebrate longevity on a job. However, there's a reason why people also celebrate the weekends and plan for a retirement after 30-40 years of being a working stiff. Some days going to work can be tedious, but we all push through those days it because it's that work that pays for the rest of our life.

I'm very grateful that the DD field has really embraced both choice and community integration-- BUT, I think that we're doing people a disservice if we don't encourage them to pursue a vocation. That's about both money and purpose. If you can maintain the lifestyle you want without worrying about the paycheck, more power to you. However, in my experience more money usually means more choices. But, if you really can't find any use for extra money, then there are all sorts of meaningful volunteer vocations too.

CLI wants to help more people develop work skills and at least learn more about available jobs in the community. Working for Firelands Local (and making $10.10/hour-- which isn't nothing) is a great way to start working on work skills and explore what you like and maybe hate.

That's al I have for this week. Keep those hands clean!

John

Unfortunately it looks like we will be having another 6 weeks of winter. Thanks a lot Phil!

Anyway, it has officially happened. We have finally received our new truck. We will put our baby to great use!

We are also looking for sponsorship on it. If you are interested please reach out to me.

Our next shred drop off day will be Wed. March 1 from 9-2.

Also in March is our annual shred day. This year it will be on Friday March 31st from 10-5. The first 500 pounds are free. This is for drop off only and only on that day.

Did you know that Firelands Local LLC paid its employees $18,959.19 last month?  That's a group total, not just one lucky guy (full disclosure).Would you like to celebrate paydays with James' crew?  Let us know!

Did you know that CLI is still running our virtual Bingo that we started in 2020?

We're doing it on Thursday afternoons and it is open to anyone, whether at home or another day service provider location. It's a lot of fun and a good way to connect with people that you might not otherwise get to see.

Did we mention that there are prizes?

CLI's Good Works Cafe offers a free community lunch every Friday afternoon at the Norwalk Reservoir Clubhouse.

Thanks to the generous donations (money & food), CLI is able to take care of our neighbors and also get some real life restaurant and customer service job training.

If you'd like to learn more or would like to donate to this cause--

please contact Rhonda White by phone at 419-706-5136 or by email at Rhonda@CLIsupports.com
