Did you know that the Ernsthausen Community Recreation Center offers personal instruction to help people learn to use the exercise machines correctly? This is a great community resource!

Father’s Forum: An opportunity for fathers to chat via Zoom with other Ohio fathers to share their experiences and what supports and resources they want and need. Afternoon and evening sessions are available:

John's usual--
CLI held our first cornhole tournament of this summer's 4-match series last Friday evening. We usually hold this at 38 West Seminary, but the City of Norwalk let us close down the block of Seminary in front of Kenilee Lanes-- which was pretty awesome. The timing was good too as construction of the new splash pad behind Suhr Park started this week. I don't think that they'll let us close the street again, so next month's tournament will be back at 38 West Seminary, so we'll have to sort out exactly where we put the boards as our usual court space will be a lot wetter. Turnout was decent for the first match of the season-- 12 teams, which meant that the payout for the winners was $240! Once we get up to our later season average of 25+ teams, each tournament winners will get more than $500. It's worth coming out. Of course Mark (who wins everything apparently won the $50 scratch-off board).

CLI will be running limited programming for the week of July 4th-- courier and community employment transportation only. We're doing this so that I can give staff a vacation week over the summer. Otherwise that's really hard to do because CLI is so much smaller than it was pre-COVID.
Have a great week this week. I know that summer officially just started last week-- and that I say it all the time-- but-- summer is going to fly by. We want everyone to make the most of it. CLI always caters to special requests, so definitely let staff know if there's something that is on your 2022 warm weather bucket list.

Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass under trees on a summer’s day, listening to the murmur of the water, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is by no means a waste of time.

Sometimes cooling off on a hot day is as easy as a shady walk in the wood-- like these guys on the Storybook Trail in Findlay State Park in Wellington.

FAQ of the week:
Q : What is Juneteenth & why wasn't CLI closed for that last Monday?
A: From History.com:
Juneteenth (short for “June Nineteenth”) marks the day when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas in 1865 to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people be freed. The troops’ arrival came a full two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth honors the end to slavery in the United States and is considered the longest-running African American holiday. On June 17, 2021, it officially became a federal holiday.
Confederate General Robert E. Lee had surrendered at Appomattox Court House two months earlier in Virginia, but slavery had remained relatively unaffected in Texas—until U.S. General Gordon Granger stood on Texas soil and read General Orders No. 3: “The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free.”
We at CLI recognize how important Juneteenth is in American history. However, CLI is only paid when we provide a direct service-- so the short answer is simply that we can not afford to give our staff another day off. We are trying to provide appropriate programs for both Juneteenth & Martin Luther King Day so that we're helping people understand the history and the context. The downside with making Juneteenth just another day that banks &government offices aren't open is that the context quickly gets lost and it's just another 3 day weekend.

CLI & Firelands Local have new opportunities for paid vocational training. So, for those of you who have been asking when the workshop will be open-- this is it.
Full-disclosure, it's going to be a mix of paid work at the workshop, or perhaps another community work place AND classes or activites related to long-term goals of community employment.
Interested? Space is limited, so talk to your SSA today.
