John's usual--

CLI will be rolling out two new programs in the coming weeks. The first is a new Friday/Saturday Job Club (we're still workshopping a more fun name) for people who have a job in the community. There are 2 primary goals for this new service. First is career exploration. Community employment isn't a one & done thing, but a process. We need to do a better job helping people advance their careers and/or make sure that they are making an informed decision about whether to stay in the job they have, or whether to consider something new. One goal of this new program will be to create a forum where people can learn from each other and talk about the jobs they have now and start working toward the job they want if that applies. The second primary goal for this new service will be simply to help employees with DD have normal opportunities to socialize after work and on the weekends. I've been connected to a sheltered workshop program for a long time and I've seen many people quit a good community job to return to the shop because they are lonely and just want to be able to hang out with friends. We need to make that a normal opportunity so that getting a day job doesn't mean that you no longer get a social life.

The second new program is a curriculum of after-hours and weekend services for high school students with DD so that we can help them and their families better anticipate and plan for life after high school. The goals of this program are to provide learning & social opportunities in community-integrated settings and to help kids build a productive transition into their first job, internship, or even day program. The reality is that there is a huge difference in what's available to adults after school. Ohio has developed a lot of new resources for young adults. There's an opportunity to braid some of these new resources to support newly minted young adults if we can just figure out how to start nuts & bolts planning earlier.

Other than that, it's a short week for yours truly this week. I'm taking off this Friday as my oldest, Graeme, graduates from Ohio University this Saturday-- and will officially be off the family payroll this fall when he starts his new job as Athens High School's Physics & Astronomy teacher. 1 down - still 1 more to go. I'm very proud. However-- just going back to the above paragraph about high school students-- Graeme's success now is 100% a result of parental planning/action that started at least 2 years before he graduated. That's true of every college graduate. It's also true of many kids graduating from vocational schools. Anyway, weather forecast for next weekend looks really good, although at the expense of lots of rain this week evidently.

Have a great week!

John

Attention: Family Caregivers

The Family Caregiver Survey is for a family member or guardian who provides paid or unpaid caregiving to a family member with intellectual or developmental disabilities who receives supports from a county board of developmental disabilities. The data that you provide will allow the Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities to understand the challenges faced by family caregivers and formulate policies to overcome them.
