Are you curious to learn more about why Ohio's state-wide DD services are pushing so hard toward integration? The two biggest drivers are advocacy and fear regarding the unconstitutional nature of segregation. The video below was made by a Texas group, but is just as relevant to Ohio. While it talks about independent living-- the Olmstead Decision applies equally to segregated day services and employment. It's definitely a thorny issue that is pushing clients, funders, and providers like CLI outside our comfort zone. But-- thanks to 60+ years of advocacy in Ohio-- we are blessed with a robust infrastructure to support people with DD. The trick is to adapt that structure to the 21st century.

We're going to miss this guy! He's not moving too far away and we've had so much experience over the past 2 years with zoom. We're hoping to keep those skills sharp to stay connected with Jeremy. He has many friends at CLI and we'll be road-tripping to his new digs soon to make sure he doesn't forget us. Let us know if you want to jump in the van for one of the trips to check in on him.

CLI lost an old friend too early last week. We've included Jean Mull's obituary below. Jean was a good friend to many of us here and she will be missed.

Thank you everyone that took the time to complete CLI's annual online survey. We will send out the scratch off ticket as promised to everyone that provided an address. Just remember us when you win! The deadline to cash in on your chance to win dozens of dollars is Monday afternoon. Please provide us with your thoughts-- the positive and negative. We can't get better-- or more person-centered if people don't tell us what to do and what to stop doing.

The CLI Board is reviewing the annual strategic plan as we get ready for 2022. Your input will be incorporated in this plan. We intend to push out an condensed version of the this plan-- and a summary of 2021 accomplishments later in December.

Jean A. Mull, 48, of Bellevue passed away Tuesday Nov. 9, 2021, at her home. She was born Sep. 11, 1973, in Findlay-- the daughter of Glen E. & Beverly J. (Stauffer) Mull Ommert.

Jean worked as a greeter at Goodwill Industries in Bellevue and Sandusky and Christie Lane Industries in Norwalk. She had a degree in Sign Language and also in Computer Information Systems. She was a member of the Bellevue Assembly of God Church, where she was a Sunday School Teacher. Jean collected Betty Boop items. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Jean is survived by her mother, Beverly Ommert of Bellevue, her brother, Joseph Mull of Toledo, sisters: Susan K. Mull of Tiffin, Kerry (Larry) Phillips of Wooster, Stacy Smith of Bellevue Jodie (Dana) Brown of Port Clinton, and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her father, Glen E. Mull, step-father, Bob Ommert, grandparents, Floyd & Hazel Stauffer, John & Nellie Mull, brother in law, Phil Smith, aunts and uncles, Marvin Ireland, Leroy Ireland, Nancy Hills, Shirley Wilcox, William Ommert and Sue Ommert.

Memorials are suggested to the Bellevue Assembly of God.

It is hard to believe that Thanksgiving is right around the corner.
 
We booked 4 new purges of material to be shredded, we also signed up a new customer and added services to an existing customer.
 
Production: We shredded 10,000 pounds of paper and recycled another 4,000 pounds of cardboard. We also completed another 21,500 units of assembly.
 
I have included a picture of a sunrise from my backyard.

Technology Can Create Opportunities for People with Developmental Disabilities

Amidst the challenges of the workforce crisis our system faces, we must embrace the possibilities that technology offers Ohioans with developmental disabilities, their families, and providers of service.
 
As a Technology First state, we are at the forefront of technology supports, and conversations about technology must be a central part of every person’s planning process. I ask our system partners to take advantage of all the innovation and services we offer in Ohio.
 
Technology can offer supports for every person and is available throughout the state. No county is too small, no provider is too large, and every person can benefit from using technology in the way that they are comfortable.
 
The innovative way LADD uses technology is one example of what can be accomplished through the Technology First initiative and what is possible when our system embraces this type of technology.
 
If you are not comfortable with technology or don’t know what is available, please reach out to our Community Life Engagement team, who will connect you to resources and vendors who are eagerly waiting to support our system.
 
I am extremely grateful for all the hard work everyone in Ohio continues to do. Through local collaboration and individual technology options, I am confident that we will find person-centered solutions that work for every person who relies on Ohio’s service system for support.
