Week of

October 5th!

OHgo volunteers are frequently in the weeds . . .

(but totally ok with that)

The Norwalk Senior Enrichment Center is always

a fun place to spend time! Everything from cold weather cornhole to Wii bowling!

John's Usual--

It's been a quick week! For you young people amongst us-- pay attention to all the more seasoned (old) people around you who are always banging on about how quickly time goes by-- just because it's a cliche' doesn't make it not true! It will be mid-October next week already!

CLI has lots of fall stuff going on. We're trying to spend as much time outdoors as possible. Winter is coming. Get outside while the getting is good!

We also are building some new volunteer activities so stay tuned. I know that everyone was bummed to close out our 6+ year run of the Good Works Cafe where we dished out a free weekly meal to locals every Friday. BUT-- the reality is that change is necessary. We can't do new stuff if we don't let go of old stuff sometimes too-- even when that old stuff is something that you love.

One of the things that I'm really really excited about is that we're building a curriculum around blowing up this weekly newsletter so that the news is actually collected and published by CLI clients, not just staff. We also want to feature more things than just our activities. Stay tuned for that!

Kenilee Lanes will be officially open to the public for open bowling on Saturday, October 24th. Don is offering a free hot dog & soda to anybody who shows up-- whether you bowl or not. Swing by & take a look at the new fully wheelchair accessible space!

Thanks to everyone who sent in pictures this time around! I love it. Keep 'em coming.

John

What's new in THRIVE?

While not technically part of CLI's THRIVE curriculum-- CLI volunteers often learn valuable work-ready skills & make IRL connections by donating their time to area non-profits like OHgo & When Pigs Fly. These volunteers stamped tags at the Norwalk Public Library for When Pigs Fly.

Firelands Local LLC

The workshop provides a safe space to learn new job task-- both to broaden abilities, but also to see what people like to do-- whether that's big "gross motor" tasks like baling cardboard and boatwrap, or "fine motor" tasks like product assembly.

The workshop has been very busy this summer and fall-- lots of assembly work, shredding, and tons (literally) of boatwrap to bale. All Firelands Local LLC employees have a weekly work schedule-- but when the shop is busy like it is, there are often opportunities to pick up an extra shift. All jobs pay at least $11.04 per hour, so it's possible to make a decent check if you show up to work as scheduled and are willing to jump in extra when asked.

CLI & FL work together to provide an array of employment training options both in the workshop and out in the community.

If any other Firelands Local employees (besides Andrew & Zeth) would like to be featured in this section of the newsletter-- send in your work pics!

CLI's after-hours activites fill up quick-- make sure we know if you're interested in something. For you football fans, we've got lots of local games on the schedule! Definitely sweater weather though, so dress warm!
