Medicare Specimen Collection & CLIA Certificate Updates for Labs
Specimen Collection Travel Allowance Changes – Effective Jan. 1, 2026
Medicare Administrative Contractors (MACs) will update claims systems for HCPCS code P9603 (travel allowance for specimen collection) to allow billing to the 10th of a mile for trips under 100 miles.
For eligible trips:
- < 100 miles → bill to the 10th of a mile (example: 99.9)
- 100+ miles → round up to the next whole mile
- < 1 mile → enter with a leading zero before the decimal (example: 0.9)
CLIA Certificates & Fee Coupons Going Fully Electronic – Deadline Mar. 1, 2026
CMS will stop mailing paper CLIA certificates and fee coupons after this date.
To continue receiving them, labs must switch to email notifications through:
- Your state agency
- Your Accreditation Organization
- The CMS-116 application form (check the electronic notifications box)
These updates may require workflow changes, claims system adjustments, and administrative updates to keep your lab compliant and avoid disruptions.
If you have questions about how to best comply with these new updates or any other impacts to your current workflow, feel free to reach out to us directly.
