Important Dates
Month of May - Asian Heritage Month
This day is an opportunity for us to learn more about the many achievements and contributions of Canadians of Asian heritage who, throughout our history, have done so much to make Canada the country we know and love.

Marks the beginning of Canadian Jewish Heritage Month, a time to celebrate Jewish culture, faith, and history in Canada.

A time to honour the sacrifices made by past members of the Canadian armed forces in the liberation of the Netherlands during the Second World War.

This say reminds us that those who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, Two-Spirit, or non-binary continue to experience significant disparities – including negative mental health impacts, unemployment, homelessness, harassment, and bullying – and they are often victims of violence simply for being themselves.

May 24 - Victoria Day
The Sovereign's birthday has been celebrated in Canada since the reign of Queen Victoria (1837-1901).

Environmental Scan and Systems Mapping: Services for Newcomers in Calgary
The Immigrant Education Society (TIES) worked closely with CLIP and the various service providers in Calgary to conduct an environmental scan of local services available to newcomers. The final report was completed in December 23, 2022.

This research study aims to provide a current understanding of the dimensions and dynamics of the changing immigrant-serving sector in Calgary. This study illustrates how organizations and services for immigrants can be understood with a core-periphery model.
The Charter Story
CCIS welcomed 342 Privately Sponsored Refugees (PSRs) on a charter flight from Uganda almost at the end of the fiscal year. The March 29 charter to Calgary also included four Government Assisted Refugees (GARs).

This was the first charter consisting of Global (non-Afghan) refugees. It was also the first charter almost entirely consisting of PSRs. The charter had newcomers destined to 16 cities/centers in Canada from Edmonton to Fort McMurray in Alberta to New Westminster in BC and a couple of centers in Saskatchewan. It had people from across Africa, speaking 11 different languages, ranging from Tigrinya to Amharic to Kinyarwanda (which needed us to have several translators on site at the airport).

This charter was special also because they organized SIN (Social Insurance Number) Clinics for the clients with the help of Service Canada at the airport itself (for the first time), regardless of their final destinations. They hosted 151 clients, who were scheduled to fly on the following days, in one of their reception centers, Hotel Amenida.
A Call For...
2023 Welcoming Ottawa Week
Ottawa Local Immigration partnership (OLIP) cordially invites you to contribute an event to the 2023 Welcoming Ottawa Week (WOW) that will be held on June 19 – 30.

To be qualified as WOW events, events are required to include immigrants and refugees, discuss topics related to newcomer settlement and integration, or celebration of diversity. The events should also take place during the WOW 2023 timeframe (June 19th – 30th).
The Anti Racist Array
Join the City of Calgary Strategic Plan launch by planning a visit to The Anti-Racist Array on the steps of City Hall between May 8 - May 20, 2023.

Some ideas about planning your visit:
  • Plan a trip with your team, board, or community to visit the display in front of City Hall. You can plan a community walk/run, coffee meet-up, or a meeting to discuss how The City's anti-racism focus areas inspire, challenge, or align with your work or initiatives.
  • We encourage all youth and students to submit an image, photo, or drawing of their representation of all races working together, i.e., an anti-racist City. The images will be incorporated as part of the display if we receive it by May 2.
