Dean's Message

Dear Students,
I hope that the beginning of the semester is treating you well. I know that many of you come from colder climates, but it’s imperative that you keep yourself warm in sunny, but sometimes chilly, Southern California. Moreover, this is the time of the year when the cold and flu is rampant. Please take precautions in not getting sick, and if you do, make sure to pay a visit to student health.
On an equally important note, CLSA is preparing for a very vibrant semester! Our spring calendar promises to have something for everyone -our workshops are academic, professional, cultural, and offer so much more! On February 15
th
, Dr. Judith Perez-Caro, the Director of Equity and Inclusion at Georgetown University Law Center, will come and speak on how to navigate law school as a student of color. This will be a great opportunity for students who are interested in pursuing law to learn from her insights and pearls of wisdom. In addition, we will have events where Latinx professionals share their talents in the arts (music, film, spoken word, poetry), as well as in medicine, consulting, and the federal government. We hope to see you all there!
For those of you who want to get more involved with CLSA, I strongly encourage you to apply to become a CLSA sponsor. This is a great opportunity to mentor first year students at the Claremont Colleges. As you know, CLSA sponsors provide a positive impact to our Latinx students who are transitioning into college. This opportunity is open to undergraduate students, across the 5Cs, and are in good academic standing.
If interested,

! For more information on this opportunity, please contact Assistant Dean Casillas at

.
Lastly, please know that your CLSA familia cares about you. When your schedule permits, stop by and say hello to Ernie, Xochitl, and I. We are a resource and we’re here to help you succeed!
Sincerely,
Tony Jimenez

Researching Latina Punks:
From the Underground to Higher Education
Contributor: Jessica Delgado
CGU Masters Student in English and Cultural Studies
Punk women in an educational profession have changed the way I’ve thought about learning and doing. In kindergarten, my parents were told that I had ADHD because I refused to sit still and simply accept the answers given to me by the teacher; I disrupted the class with the question, “Why” and wanted a hands-on approach to what I was learning. While many educators refrained from handling this approach, all of my punkera educators were able to nurture these desires and encouraged my ever-growing curiosity of the self and the world around me.
Later on, I discovered the musical genre of punk; quickly, it transformed into beyond an obsession with fast music and into the desire to break all boundaries and oppressions. I didn’t listen to just the music for its lyrics, but for its political undertones and embrace of the strange and unusual. I started to question what the world around me really composed of, and how I could compose my multiple identities as a person discovering my queerness, Chicanx/ Latinx identities, and pursuer of higher education to become an educator.
