It's been a busy few weeks here at CMC, and we've got some insightful features and exciting contemporary music news and events to share with you. Here's a brief summary of what we've been up to in March as well as a sneak preview of some great contemporary music projects and events happening in April!

DAVID FENNESSY WINS NEW MUSIC AWARD 

At a ceremony in Glasgow on 8 March, David Fennessy was awarded a prize in the small/medium scales works category of the inaugural Scottish Awards for New Music  for his piece  Panopticon . CMC attended the awards, which took place in Glasgow's Drygate Brewery and were hosted by Scottish based mezzo-soprano Andrea Baker. CMC wishes to extend our warmest congratulations to David Fennessy, as well as our thanks to New Music Scotland for their hospitality.  Read More.  

IRISH FEMALE ARTISTS MIXTAPE CURATED BY AMANDA FEERY (PART 1) 

Following the recent Sounding the Feminists social media campaign for gender equality in music programming, CMC asked composer Amanda Feery to put together a mixtape featuring some of the Irish female artists who are active in new music today. Listen to Part 1 of a two-part mixtape here.

REPORT: CMC ATTEND ACDA 2017 NATIONAL CONFERENCE IN MINNEAPOLIS 

In March, CMC attended the American Choral Director's Association National Conference, in partnership with Limerick Sings Festival and the Association of Irish Choirs. Exhibiting at the conference was part of CMC's plan to promote choral music from Ireland to a wider international audience. The conference is the biggest of its kind and hosts over 5000 delegates and 8000 choir members from across the United States. CMC COMPOSERS PARTICIPATE IN COMPOSER LAB IN ASSOCIATION WITH THE RTÉ NATIONAL SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA 

Composer Lab is an initiative from the  RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra in association with CMC, aimed at composers with limited experience in writing for professional symphony orchestra, with a public workshop and performance taking place on Monday 10 April and on Tuesday 9 May. An instrumental workshop with the orchestra involving CMC composers  Seán DohertyMatthew WhitesideDavid Bremner and Francis Heery took place in March. EARLY MUSIC PLAYLIST BY CMC COMPOSERS 

As part of the fifth European Early Music Day CMC asked three composers - Linda Buckley, Kevin O'Connell and Benedict Schlepper Connolly - to each choose pieces of early music and write about their influence and significance to them. Listen to the full playlist on our website!

Ahead of the launch of his latest CD
Umbilical on Diatribe Records later this month, explore the works of composer, virtuoso guitarist and innovative researcher  Benjamin Dwyer on CMC's website, including his scores, CD's and books.  


Upcoming events in April  
COMPOSER LAB: PUBLIC WORKSHOP       
Monday 10 April 2017, National Concert Hall, Earlsfort Terrace, Dublin 2, 10-12.45pm and 1.30pm-3pm 

Ahead of a world premiere performance of new works completed as part of Composer Lab 2017 on Tuesday 9 May, participant composers David Bremner, Seán Doherty, Francis Heery and Matthew Whiteside bring their individual works-in-progress to the stage for a public workshop. This public workshop promises to be a fascinating and engaging insight into the challenges and complexities of writing for orchestra.  The workshop is run in two sessions on the day: from 10am-12.45pm and from 1.30pm to 3pm.  To book your place, click here.
