We've had a busy few weeks in CMC, with many wonderful events and projects happening. Here's a brief summary of what we've been up to in April, as well as a preview of contemporary music events happening in May!

RONAN GUILFOYLE ON THELONIUS MONK 

Just before going on stage, Thelonious Monk would often deliver this particular piece of advice to his band: 'Don't forget, always know ...' 

2017 is the centenary year of Thelonious Monk, and composer, jazz musician and educator Ronan Guilfoyle is currently writing a piece celebrating this iconic figure. In a special feature for our website, he writes about the new piece and the influence of Monk on his music. Read more.

NEW OPERA IN IRELAND IN THE 21ST CENTURY- REPORT 

On the 23rd of March 2017, CMC hosted a panel entitled 'New Opera in Ireland in the 21st Century' to discuss the issue of the future of contemporary opera in Ireland. Chaired by soprano and RIAM's Head of Vocal Studies and Opera  Kathleen Tynan , the panel of contributors included composers  Ann Cleare  and  Stephen McNeff , soprano  Sylvia O'Brien  and  Michael Dervan , music writer and broadcaster. 

Two issues - funding and audiences - and a provocative question posed by McNeff - "Why does Ireland need opera?" - dominated proceedings.   Read writer Michael Quinn's full report of this lively and engaging debate! 

LAETARE ENSEMBLE WIN CMC PERPETUAL TROPHY AT CORK INTERNATIONAL CHORAL FESTIVAL 

Laetare Vocal Ensemble, conducted by Dr Róisín Blunnie were the recipients of this year's CMC Perpetual Trophy at the Cork International Choral Festival, which took place from the 26-30th April 2017. 

The trophy is awarded each year for the best performance of an original choral work by an Irish composer written after 1975, chosen from CMC's library collection. The choir was awarded the trophy for their performance of Seán Doherty's It's Strange About Stars in Ireland's Choir of the Year Competition. 

CMC wishes to extend its warmest congratulations to the choir on their outstanding success at the competition. Read more. 

WE ARE IRELAND: COLLECTION OF MUSIC FROM IRELAND RELEASED 
WE ARE IRELAND is a special collection of music from Ireland, providing a snapshot of emerging Irish artists across a range of music genres. Funded by Culture Ireland, the compilation highlights the scope and talent of musicians who are creating new work and performing both nationally and internationally.

CMC Shop Spotlight

Upcoming events in May 
COMPOSER LAB 2017 PERFORMANCE   
Tuesday 9 May 2017, National Concert Hall, Earlsfort Terrace,  Dublin 2, 1 :05 pm

Composer Lab 2017, developed by the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra and the Contemporary Music Centre, culminates with a concert featuring the world premieres of new orchestral works by composer-participants David Bremner, Seán Doherty, Francis Heery and Matthew Whiteside.  T his is a free ticketed event, however booking is advised.
