Colonel Chris Nyland is from Seattle, WA. He graduated from the University of Washington and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the Infantry in 1997.
Upon completion of the Infantry Officer Basic Course, Colonel Nyland was assigned to the 10th Mountain Division where he served as a Rifle Platoon Leader in the 2nd Battalion, 14th Infantry Regiment. He was then assigned as an Aide-de-Camp and deployed to Tuzla, Bosnia in support of Operation JOINT FORGE. Upon return from this deployment he again served as a Rifle Platoon Leader in the 1st Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment.
After promotion to Captain and completion of the Infantry Captains Career Course and Combined Arms and Services Staff School in 2001, Colonel Nyland was assigned to Ft. Bragg, North Carolina where he served as the 82d Airborne Division Readiness Officer and subsequently deployed to Afghanistan in July of 2003 as the Deputy Division Planner. While in Afghanistan, he assumed command of Charlie Company, 2nd Battalion, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment. He later deployed the company to Baghdad, Iraq. He also commanded the 82d Airborne Division Long Range Surveillance Detachment and Delta Company, 4th Ranger Training Battalion (Reconnaissance and Surveillance Leaders Course).
