5 QUESTIONS FOR GAVIN BRENNAN
Saxophonist and contemporary music enthusiast Gavin Brennan programmed and performed in CMC's October Salon Series concert, alongside Aileen Cahill (piano), Adrian Mantu (cello) and Adreea Banciu (viola). In advance of the concert, CMC asked Gavin some questions about the Irish contemporary music landscape for young musicians. Read the full interview here.

You can also see photos and audio recordings of our October Salon concert here, which featured the premiere of a new work by  Jonathan Nangle for baritone sax and electronics, as well as music by Ailís Ní Ríain, Deirdre Mc Kay, Eric Sweeney and Matthew Whiteside.

THE MORNINGTON SINGERS WIN CMC AWARD AT DERRY INTERNATIONAL CHORAL FESTIVAL
The City of Derry International Choral Festival took place on the 19-23 October 2016. As part of the festival, The Contemporary Music Centre presents an annual award for the best performance of a piece by an Irish composer. The purpose of this award is to encourage choirs of all standards and abilities to perform the large volume of choral repertoire composed by CMC registered composers.

This year's prize was awarded to The Mornington Singers, who performed Rhona Clarke's   Regina Coeli .   The choir also took third place overall in the International Competition category. A   commemorative  engraved plate, cash prize plus vouchers to redeem on choral works from the Contemporary Music Centre were presented to the choir by CMC's librarian Susan Brodigan. CMC extends its warmest congratulations to The Mornington Singers and to the organising committee of this year's festival.

COMPOSER FOCUS: AMANDA FEERY, JUDITH RING AND JANE O'LEARY

In advance of our final Salon Series concert on 17 November featuring performers Martin Johnson (cello) and Adele Johnson (viola), CMC asked composers Jane O'Leary, Amanda Feery and Judith Ring about their new works for cello and viola which will be premiered at this month's Salon, as well exploring some of their artistic influences and thoughts on the Irish contemporary music landscape. JOHN GIBSON R.I.P

CMC was saddened to learn of composer and pianist John Gibson's unexpected death on 1 September 2016 at his home in Cork. By way of a small tribute, CMC asked two composers who knew him well and worked with him during his career - Vincent Kennedy and Jane O'Leary - to share some of their memories of him, which you can read   here.
CMC would like to extend our deepest condolences to the Gibson family.
