The Contemporary Music Centre October Newsletter

We've had a busy few weeks in CMC, with many wonderful events and projects happening. Here's a brief summary of what we've been up to in September and October!

C ulture Night at CMC took place on Friday, 16 September 2016, and saw composers Jennifer Walshe, Nick Roth & Panos Ghikas present an exciting programme of new music with live performance, film screenings and talks surrounding Walshe's fascinating  Aisteach  project, a fictional history of the Irish avant garde.
Read a full report of the event and check out a video of some of the performance on our website!

Cross Currents is a landmark music documentary series, narrated by award-winning actor Barry McGovern, exploring contemporary Irish composers and their work. Produced by Athena Media in association with CMC, the series was broadcast on RTÉ lyric fm in September across three episodes and features interviews with composers Gerald Barry, Seóirse Bodley,  John Buckley, Linda Buckley, Frank Corcoran, Raymond Deane, Donnacha Dennehy, Roger Doyle, Dave Flynn, Amanda Feery, Michael Gallon, John Kinsella, Garrett Sholdice, and Jennifer Walshe.

As part of the series, CMC ran some special features on our website, which included highlighting some of the stories of contemporary Irish composition as well as a series of short audio portraits recorded at the homes of some of the composers featured in the series.

Concorde, the first specialist contemporary music ensemble to be established in Ireland, celebrates its 40th anniversary w ith a series of four concerts at the Hugh Lane Gallery in Dublin.  Formed in 1976 under the artistic direction of Jane O'Leary, the ensemble gave its first performance at the American Embassy on 18 September that year. The first concert in the series took place in September, with an upcoming concert this Sunday October 16, featuring a programme of music by Jane O'Leary who also celebrates her birthday this month.

To mark this anniversary, a special online exhibition Concorde40, which explores the history of the ensemble has been put together by Maynooth University MA Digital Humanities student Richard Breen. Concorde40  highlights various materials (programmes, photographs, recordings) which document the history of Ireland's first specialist music ensemble in an engaging and interactive manner.  R ead more  about the project here.
