2020 CMD-IT Academic Careers Workshop
Application Deadline:   February 3, 2020

The  2020 Academic Careers Workshop will be held April 2-5, 2020 in Houston, TX. The goal of the annual workshop is to mentor underrepresented assistant- and associate-level faculty, senior doctoral students, and postdocs about the academic careers.  The workshop targets the following communities: underrepresented ethnic minorities (African American, Native Americans, Hispanics) and people with disabilities.

The workshop includes diverse senior faculty serving on engaging panels covering the following topics:
  • tenure and promotion process
  • launching a research program
  • effective teaching strategies
  • promotion to full professor
  • administrative opportunities
  • detailed session on proposal writing
The workshop also includes a mock proposal review session, whereby participants have an opportunity to review actual proposals.  Participants have found the mock review sessions to provide significant insights into proposal writing.

Below are comments from 2019 workshop participants:

"I was mostly interested to know how to write effective proposals and gain an understanding of how funding works. Both of these were addressed effectively at the workshop."

"The workshop addressed my goal in seeking to learn about the world of academia and if it would be fitting for my desire to work in industry and research government sectors. The session on Launching a Research Program was particularly helpful to this."

Support for travel, hotel, and meals is provided for all participants through a grant from the  National Science Foundation .  The Academic Career Workshop is organized by CMD-IT, in collaboration with AccessComputing and CAHSI
