The hallmark of an exemplary leader is how that person values effecting positive change for others, not only for themselves. Great leaders make their mark by managing people and organizations with integrity, advocating for justice and speaking up against injustices. Those qualities, and many more of a great leader, are embodied in Equality Ohio Executive Director Alana Jochum '10, the first recipient of Cleveland-Marshall College of Law's Leader on the Rise AwardJochum will accept the award at the October 26 Hall of Fame Celebration.

C|M|LAW Dean Lee Fisher established the Leader on the Rise Award to be given to a C|M|LAW graduate from the past 10 years who has demonstrated extraordinary community leadership and who has given back to Cleveland-Marshall with their time, talent, and/or treasure.

" It is a great honor to be recognized with this award," said Jochum. "My experience with C|M|LAW is tied to my personal and professional growth with so many others people I rely on for advice and guidance, for which I am so grateful. In receiving this award, I cannot help but feel I am accepting both an honor and a charge to live the values that have been tempered in me by C|M|LAW."

What C|M|LAW Means to Me?
I was a reporter and photographer for a weekly newspaper who pursued a law degree to enhance my journalistic career. But I fell in love with the majesty of law and its power to combat injustice during my first few weeks of law school. Like so many C|M|LAW graduates, this law school provided the education and inspiration I needed to take my life in a very different direction. I will be forever grateful for the opportunity C|M|LAW provided to Learn Law, Live Justice.

What C|M|LAW Means to Me?
Cleveland-Marshall is a very important local source of judges, other public officials, and good solid private practitioners (a number of whom have become outstanding Partners at Jones Day). I was very honored and privileged to have been asked to give the Commencement Speech at the Law School in 1988 and to have received an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the Law School and the University in 2017.

What C|M|LAW Meant to Her?
In her last public address, Marilyn recalled being "married and residing safely in the suburbs with my four daughters" when she first heard President Kennedy's citizenship challenge: "ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country." His call to action and the events of the turbulent 1960's - particularly the assassinations of JFK and Martin Luther King, the Hough Riots, election of Cleveland Mayor Carl Stokes, and the passage of the federal Civil Rights and Fair Housing Acts - sent her to law school. After watching what civil rights attorneys were doing at that time, Marilyn instantly knew this was her calling in life and found the courage to eventually enroll at C|M|LAW at the age of 47, twice the age of most of her classmates. Fully engaged in the practice of law until her death at age 83, Marilyn's legacy of exceptional commitment to social justice, fierce advocacy and love for the law is widely recognized. C|M|LAW was the springboard that made this all possible, providing the knowledge, tools and opportunities Marilyn needed to go on to positively change the lives of so many and blaze new trails for us all.
