Cleveland State University's Cleveland-Marshall College of Law had the highest passage rate for first-time takers of the July Ohio Bar Exam. Our passage rate was 93%, well above the state average of 79%.

This is the second consecutive Ohio Bar Exam in which C|M|LAW had the top passage rate, following its 82% pass rate for the February 2018 exam.

"First, I want to acknowledge the hard work of all our graduates who prepared for the bar exam, and congratulate those who passed and are now beginning their careers as licensed attorneys in Ohio," said C|M|LAW Dean Lee Fisher. "I would also like to thank all of the dedicated faculty and staff in our College who have provided the educational excellence, mentorship and support that have helped so many of our graduates be successful in their chosen careers."

Justice Ginsburg Talks Live With C|M|LAW Community Via Skype Chat

U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg spoke to the CM|LAW community via Skype in a packed Moot Court Room. Justice Ginsburg spoke about cases from her career that removed barriers and opened doors that had been closed due to gender expectations. Her longtime friend and colleague, C|M|LAW Professor Emerita Jane Picker (2017 C|M|Hall of Fame Honoree), also Skyped in and recounted stories from the years when she and the Justice were part of a small but courageous community of women lawyers. Professor Ken Kowalski moderated the event that was sponsored by the Cleveland-Marshall Law Alumni Association and our Women Law Students Association and included a screening of the documentary "RBG."

Professor Jonathan Witmer-Rich has developed a first-of-its-kind C|M|LAW course based on the current season of the popular Serial podcast.  The course --titled "Understanding and Reforming the Criminal Justice Process" -- will take place during the Spring semester and use the podcast episodes to explore issues in the criminal justice system.

Remembering Professor Emeritus Joel J. Finer

Professor Emeritus Joel J. Finer passed away on November 2, 2018 at the Hospice of the Western Reserve in Westlake, Ohio, after a long illness and a short stay there .  He was a graduate of City College of New York and Yale Law School, where he was only one of six students to be selected for the Yale Law Journal after his first year of law school.

Professor Finer began his long and illustrious academic career at the University of Texas School of Law, where he headed the Federal Appellate Defender Program. His scholarly research on religious rights in the use of psychedelic drugs led him to aid in the appellate defense of Dr. Timothy Leary, the noted psychotherapist that studied hallucinogenic drugs like LSD and marijuana. Professor Finer then worked at a New York law firm, was a visiting professor at Stanford University, and was a member of the faculty at University of Arizona College of Law for ten years.

Professor Finer began his tenure with Cleveland-Marshall College of Law at Cleveland State University in 1980 and retired in 2008.  His main teaching areas were: Criminal Law, Family Law, Biomedical Ethics & the Law, Law & Mental Health, and Law & Psychiatry.  He was well known for his love of learning and teaching; he often told his students, "Everything is open to question; challenge me, challenge the judges, challenge yourself, but remember to do what's right and to love what you're doing."

Professor Finer was very much loved by his wife Joan. He leaves a younger sister, Ellen Finer Wachtel and brother-in-law Paul Wachtel, in New York City.

The Cleveland-Marshall College of Law Professor Joel J. Finer Award is given annually to the law school's top Criminal Procedure students. The Joel J. Finer Award was created over 15 years ago by his former student, Carter Strang '84, a partner at the Cleveland firm Tucker Ellis, as a tribute to Professor Finer's teaching, scholarship, and impact on the lives of his students.  To date, over 60 Cleveland-Marshall law students have received the award.
