CMMA is proud to announce the YAT!
The Youth Apprenticeship Toolkit was created to help educators and manufacturers navigate the process of starting a Youth Skills Training or Youth Apprenticeship program. Both options are for Minnesota students who are 16 years of age and older, focus on career preparation and training with a specific career pathway; and are paid experiences. The site has information on both the Youth Skills Training program through the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry and the Youth Apprenticeship program through the Minnesota Department of Education.  A comparison of the two programs is also included.

Schools can find a step-by-step process, requirements, cost, forms, agreement examples and more information on CTE requirements for schools. Please help spread the word!

  • Job shadowing
  • Youth apprenticeship programs
  • Work-based training
  • Student mentors
  • Student technical project support
  • Material donations.

CMMA met with state officials in October in honor of Minnesota Manufacturing Month. CMMA members chatted with MN Senator Torrey Westrom, MN Representative Paul Anderson, and MN DEED Commissioner Grove.  Discussion at the October 20th event focused on the need for collaboration on several workforce related issues: exposing K-12 students and parents to manufacturing careers; shrinking class size contributes to smaller labor pool; broadband issues in rural communities; changing the narrative with K-12 administrators, teachers, and counselors; expansion of STEM programs in the K-12 setting ... In addition to CMMA Exec Director Sandy Kashmark, the 10-member panel of participants included CMMA members Joel Bauer with Midsota Manufacturing, Inc. in Avon; and Chuck Hentges with St. Cloud State University; as well as TSMA member Ed Bolas with Dycast Specialties Corporation in Starbuck

Discussion focused on how the state can help manufacturers find the employees they need, with an emphasis on the ongoing need to raise awareness about good-paying manufacturing careers, particularly with parents. Watch it here.
CMMA Golf Social Recap 2020
The CMMA Golf Social once again raised significant funds in support of scholarships and youth manufacturing programs. Held at Wapicada Golf Club in St. Cloud on September 15, the eighth annual event netted $12,500 in profits. As the association’s only fundraiser each year, proceeds are earmarked to support the CMMA Foundation. The Foundation distributes scholarships and grants that support youth manufacturing programs in the region.

First place prize money was awarded to a team of golfers from Advantage One Insurance: Brian Jarl, Andy Noble, Doug Odegaard, and Justin Berg.  They scored a 55; 17 under par!

Legislative success
On October 15, 2020 the Minnesota Legislature passed a bill to conform to section 179 expensing effective for tax year 2020 providing $208 million in tax relief over the next three years. AMFA, CMMA & TSMA partnered with the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce, and many others, to advocate for this law change for the past three sessions and we are pleased it has been accomplished! Thank you to members who took the time to contact their legislators! Read more
Riveters Club
This program runs on a point system, or rivets, with CMMA advocates (current members) earning rivets as follows:
  • 1 Rivet when you bring a guest to a meeting
  • 3 Rivets when your manufacturer guest JOINS CMMA!
  • 2 Rivets when your non-manufacturer guest JOINS CMMA!
  • 1 Rivet each time the company RENEWS their membership.

Jobs in MN campaign
DEED recently launched its #GoodJobsNow campaign to promote the abundance of quality career opportunities throughout the state. For Greater Minnesota, this is a good opportunity for employers to market themselves broadly, and encourage prospective newcomers to consider your communities. View campaign videos. Web marketing minute
Historically, manufacturing businesses have relied on tradeshows to attract business. Even post-pandemic, more and more of the buying process will be done online, with many decision-makers having grown up in the internet age. Far more selling is being done virtually. Just as business travel and face-to-face selling are diminishing, so too is the interest in print material. Your presence on CMMAworks.org can be enhanced to increase leads to your sales team. Contact Becky, Communications Director, with questions.

Now in our third year of self-insurance, we are very happy we made the decision to go with TSMA’s Employer Health Plans. Lower premiums contributed to cost savings, plus the program provided an unexpected revenue stream in the form of a significant refund. We appreciate the relationship we have with Hahn Financial Group. They go above and beyond when we need help with something.”
