Bruns Avenue Elementary School Demolition
Built in 1969, the old Bruns Avenue Elementary School building served generations. The replacement project team has completed demolition of the building and the Phase 2 site work has started. The project team remains in constant communication with the principal to ensure demolition and grading activities do not affect school activities. The Phase 2 work will continue through spring of 2025.

The South Mecklenburg High School “Building X” project, part of the 2017 bond program, involves replacing a classroom building originally constructed in 1958 to enhance learning conditions. The new building is nearing completion, with final testing, inspections, and punch work underway. Furniture and technology installations are set to follow soon, marking the final steps in this exciting upgrade for the school community. | |
KNIGHTS VIEW ELEMENTARY SCHOOL | |
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools dedicated one of its newest schools Knights View Elementary, on Oct. 23. Built with funding from the 2017 bond, the 45-classroom elementary school is approximately 102,963 square feet and currently serves pre-kindergarten through fourth grade, going to fifth grade next year. BRUNS AVENUE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL | |
On Nov. 17, we dedicated Bruns Avenue Elementary School, another beautiful new school made possible by the 2017 bond package. The fifth graders’ moving performance of "Lean on Me" reminded us of the power of community, while the principal, Dr. Nathan Currie, shared the school’s history and honored long-term staff members who have shaped its success. WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT: Build-A-Shed Competition
For the first time in Charlotte, an exciting workforce development opportunity was introduced to students from Palisades and Independence high schools by the Associated Builders and Contractors of the Carolinas (ABC Carolinas). On Nov. 15, the Charlotte Build-A-SHED competition was revived. Local high school students teamed up with contractors to construct a 6’-by-8’6” playhouse in just seven hours, aiming to ignite interest in construction careers and enhance skills like safety and teamwork. The teams from Independence, partnered with Swinerton and Doggett Concrete, and Palisades (2017 bond project), partnered with Messer Construction and Charlotte Mechanical, competed using expert mentorship. The event took place at Fessler & Bowman offices.

Design Discovery Day (D3) | |
On Nov. 7, the Hord Coplan Macht architects hosted its first Design Discovery Day (D3), welcoming 25 junior and senior drafting students from West Mecklenburg High School. Students explored architecture, construction, interiors, and graphic design, learning how these disciplines shape the spaces we live, learn, and work in. Many left inspired, with one student sharing their least favorite part of the day was leaving! | |
On Oct. 24, 11 Independence High students in grades nine through 11 explored structural engineering! They learned about masonry, brick patterns and the path to becoming a licensed engineer, gaining insight into this exciting profession. Thanks to The Brick Industry Association! | |
Skilled Trades Tour at Central Piedmont Community College
On Nov. 21, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) construction partners participated in the “Skilled Trades Tour” at Central Piedmont Community College’s Harper Campus. The event highlighted various technical programs such as welding, construction management, plumbing, electrical, and HVAC, focusing on areas where skilled workers are needed. This initiative aims to bridge the gap between education and industry by ensuring that students enrolled in these skilled trade programs have opportunities to secure employment with construction manager and trade partners upon graduation. The event underscores a collaborative effort to cultivate local talent, strengthen the workforce pipeline, and support the growth of these vital programs.

Chiquitha Lloyd, executive director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (from right); Ayanna Washington, Supplier Diversity compliance specialist; and Skyne Betha, assistant director of Supplier Diversity, received the Piedmont Minority and Women Enterprise Development Above and Beyond Award. The award was established to recognize and thank individuals for their commitment and dedication. The individuals demonstrate initiative, teamwork and willingness to exceed expectations and exemplify the spirit and dedication that help to make supplier diversity programs and outreach events a success. The team was recognized for the remarkable effort and contributions in planning and programming that helped the Piedmont Region achieve its goals and reach new heights. | |

Charlotte Minority Enterprise Development Week hosted by Charlotte Area Transit Systems; Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools; City of Charlotte, Central Piedmont Community College, Hispanic Contractors Association, Inlivian, Mecklenburg County. Metrolina Minority Contractors Association, National Institute Minority Economic Development, Women Business Center Charlotte. Attendees participated in a variety of workshops, Golf Tournament, Business Expo and Awards Celebration Luncheon.
