Free or reduced-price lunch application now open

Does your student qualify for free or reduced-price lunch? Submit a meal application with School Nutrition Services today. CMS has 68 schools that are part of the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP), and all students at these schools automatically receive free lunch. Please submit an application if your student attends a non-CEP school. The submission may allow your student to have discounted fees for college applications and pay-to-play athletics, as well as the SAT and ACT tests.

Attention school webmasters! In August, we will begin your training on the new school websites. These live trainings are included on the Welcome Back to School Professional Development schedule. A sign-up form was sent to all school webmasters to choose a session. Dates, times and locations are listed below:

Highlights from "Where in the world is"

Shaka Crawford, bus driver at Harding University High, enjoyed the sunshine at Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Bain Elementary's Barbara Curtis and her daughter Ashley - who will be a first-year teacher at Mint Hill Middle - took a cruise through the Bahamas.
Governors' Village STEM Academy teachers and staff attended the UnboundED Conference in Los Angeles and received their own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Victoria Clark, a kindergarten teacher at Billingsville Elementary, enjoyed time at Oak Island.
Eddie Perez, media relations specialist, hiked his way through the Pisgah National Forest.
Metro School Assistant Principal Cel St. Pierre chased waterfalls and explored geological sites carved from Ice Age Glaciers in Washington State.
English Learner Family Academic Symposium in August

The Learning and Language Acquisition department will host the inaugural English Learner Family Academic Symposium on Saturday, Aug. 6, from 12:30-4 p.m. at the CMS International Center. The symposium will offer ways that families of English Learner students can support their children's academics at home, provide available community resources and help families feel prepared to enter a new school year. Students from our P.A.C.E. Summer Language Academy will showcase their work from this summer and march in the opening cultural flag parade.
Amy Dumigan, Michelle Haston, Corinne McBrier, Ashley Murphy, Summer Rogers and Temika Smith from Ballantyne Elementary attended the Ron Clark Academy's House Con 2022 in Atlanta in July. The national conference is an interactive professional development about the RCA House System, which Ballantyne will implement in the upcoming school year.
Mike Realon, Career and Technical Education coordinator at Palisades High, won the Lowe's Generation T National Educator of the Year Award July 23. He was recognized during a celebration of Olympic High students and alumni who completed their 10th Habitat for Humanity house.
Teaching kids history and social activism through art
Muralist and art teacher Jamil Steele at Shamrock Gardens Elementary appeared on The Kelly Clarkson Show in June. The segment highlighted his teaching of socially conscious art, encouraging students to create art that spreads awareness of issues important to them.
CMS is accepting applications for Bright Beginnings and NC Pre-K programs.

Bright Beginnings Pre-K serves around 3,240 eligible 4-year-old students in 57 CMS elementary schools. NC Pre-K serves an additional 1,472 children in 30 community-based child care centers. Seats are still available in both programs.
