Union University was established on the current magnet school's site on East Main Street before the Civil War. It was torn down in the early 1900s and replaced with the Tennessee College for Women, which existed until 1946.

When the old Central High School burned down in 1944, it was rebuilt on the site of the defunct women's college with construction being completed in 1950.
The high school's integration, which began in 1965 was finished in 1968.
Following integration, the building was no longer large enough for the student body. The high school was converted to a middle school in 1973 and designated a magnet school in 2010. In 2020 Central will be celebrating 10 years as a magnet school.

  • The yearbook staff has selected a 10-year Anniversary theme with a Neoclassical style. It will be a special year to see your student's accomplishments highlighted.
The College Board has made several changes in the AP program for the 2019-20 school year. Students will now commit to the test in the fall. Once they commit to taking the test they will have access to materials, question banks, progress checks and teachers will make assignments through their College Board accounts.

Students can register in the Attendance Office starting September 13 and the deadline is October 31. Each test still costs $94 and payments can be Cash, Check or Credit card ($96.77 for card). Another change by College Board is a cancellation fee. If a student commits and pays for a test but then does not take the test, there is a $40 fee to cancel; therefore, refunds would only be $54 if a student changes their mind or does not test. College Corner is an avenue offered for Central Magnet students to have personal meetings with college/university representatives regarding their programs, fields of study, and scholarships/financial aid during the lunch hour (12:30-1:30) throughout the fall. Central Magnet School proudly presents the comedy of all comedies, "The Complete Works of William Shakespeare, abridged!" This high-paced comedy will highlight actors playing multiple roles in short, hilarious vignettes of ALL 37 Shakespeare's plays...in just 90 minutes. If you hate Shakespeare, you'll love this show. If you love Shakespeare, you'll probably like this show. 
Performances are September 26th - 28th at 7pm. Students/Children: $5.
Adults: $8. 
Senior Parents are invited to a Senior Parent Meeting on  Tuesday, September 24th  at 6:00 pm in the auditorium. Due to a drama rehearsal that afternoon, the doors to the auditorium will open at 5:45 for the meeting. 

Information will be provided on ordering the items your student will need for graduation, deadlines for submitting information, the Central Magnet Diploma of Merit, graduating with Honors and Distinction, the Senior Banquet, and more. We hope that you will be able to join us.
Last year the high school students where asked how they would like to celebrate their birthdays. We brainstormed and came up with the following idea. Any high school students interested in attending the birthday book bistro to celebrate their birthday on Friday, September 27th can bring their $15.00 to the library anytime before the 27th. If you have any questions, contact Mrs. Denton or Mrs. Svarda in the library.
Here at the library we are enjoying your students this year! They have settled in, have been oriented, and have already visited the library three times this year as a class. We'd like to remind you about our first fundraiser this year.
Each year, our students are given the opportunity to join the birthday book club. The cost is $15 to join. We use all of the money raised from the birthday book club to purchase new books for the Central Magnet School Library. So far this year, we have had forty-eight middle school students join the birthday book club. That's $720.00 that we can use to purchase new books! 
Students who join the birthday book club can either request for the library to purchase a specific book to honor their birthday or they may choose the title they are most excited about when our first order arrives. Students who join will also be invited to the library to celebrate their birthday on the specified date that we celebrate birthdays for that semester. We will be celebrating June, July, August, September, October, November and December birthdays on October 18th during 5th period. Students who have joined the birthday book club will receive an invitation for the party in their 5th-period class prior to the celebration.

Our goal this year is to raise $2,250.00 in middle school. That would be a total of 150 middle school members.

The Fall PIG OUT will take place on  Friday, October 4th during lunch where students will have the opportunity to purchase food from different clubs and food trucks.

On average, students bring about $20 to be able to enjoy the many delicacies for sale.
The seniors will have a booth at Pig Out on Friday, October 4th . Mr. Cato will be grilling hamburgers and we will be selling a hamburger, chips, and drink combo for $5. We are asking parents to donate buns, chips, drinks, condiments, and paper goods.

The library is excited to host Peggy, The Parnassus Bookstore truck, for the Pig Out on Friday, October 4th. Students will be able to shop the specially curated collection at the Pig Out on the 4th or you can pre-order from Parnassus before the truck arrives. If you pre-order, you will pick up your purchase on the truck on the 4th. The After Prom Committee will have a booth at PIG OUT on October 4th selling pizza to raise funds for After Prom. Two slices and a drink for $5.

Volunteers are needed to help sell pizza and to donate water, plates and napkins. If you can help, please click on the link to sign up.
Central High School and Middle School Baseball teams are hosting a Bowling Scramble on  Saturday, November 9th  at Lanes Trains and Automobiles.  There will be 9:00 am and 11:00 am time slots available.  The cost to bowl is $25 and each team will consist of 6 players. We will have prizes for best team name, best team shirts, highest team score, and of course lowest team score.   
Put a team together and let’s have some fun!  We will have a sign-up table, near the cafeteria, in the coming weeks.  Please sign your team up and let’s raise some money for Central Baseball!
The next meeting of Young Life Club is Monday Sept 23rd at 8:01pm Chris and Lauren Norman’s house 1403 Hawthorn place in Northwoods.

Central Magnet Boys Basketball is hosting a STEAK DINNER on November 2nd at 6pm . It will include a silent and live auction. Tickets are $30 for one and $50 for two. See a baseball player if you’d like to buy tickets.
