The war in Ukraine lingers, and the human cost is immense. In his angelus message on October 2, Pope Francis said, “The course of the war in Ukraine has become so serious, devastating and threatening, as to cause great concern.” With Russia now hinting that they are prepared to use nuclear weapons in the war, peace-making efforts are more essential than ever. Sixty years after Pope St. John XXIII called for the banning of nuclear weapons in Pacem et Terris, it is a call that remains as relevant as ever. Let us pray that peacemaking efforts will defuse the threat of nuclear war.

Policy Notes

The USCCB Committee on Domestic Justice and Human Development issued a letter in support of the EQUAL Act. In part, the letter says: “The USCCB has long advocated in favor of less severe sentences for non-violent drug offenses, expressing our concerns regarding mass incarceration and racial disparities in the criminal legal system.”

The Equal Act (H.R. 1693) passed the House of Representatives in late September and has since been given over to the Senate.

These four voices come from Senegal, the Amazon, India, and Hawai’i.
