Proudly Celebrating 32 Years as a Professional Case Management Organization
President's Message

As we move into 2022 “Here We Go Again” comes to mind. Am I thinking of the ABBA song or the R & B from the Isley Brothers, the rock from Whitesnake or the slow sultry tones of Ray Charles? Webster defines the phrase as “something happening again in the way that you expected, especially something unpleasant” which is where we find ourselves in relation to COVID with the introduction of the new Omicron variant.

But we are stronger than we were before, we have vaccines, we understand the importance of wearing masks, hand washing and social distancing. We are learning how to cope with all the changes that are taking place and Case Managers are stepping up like never before. CMSNE is right there with you, we are working hard to continue to provide our members with quality programming and pertinent health information that will support all of you in whatever role you are currently in. We are planning for the future with our Hospital Based, Building Strategies and Annual Conferences as well as the monthly programs provided by our State Extensions. As the world evolves, so will CMSNE. We look forward to 2022 with a renewed sense of optimism and a focus on what we can do to support all of you.

CMSNE Social Initiative Food Insecurity

Now that the holidays are past us and the special foods and celebrations are winding down it’s more important than ever to think about those around us that continue to struggle with Food Insecurity.

Through the holiday season there were many promotions and adds encouraging us to donate monies or food items such as the “Hannaford Helps Fight Hunger” campaign, the “buy one donate one” campaign and other collections for local food pantries and soup kitchens but support for those in need should not end there. We all need to help one another in whatever way we can.

Feeding America brings together community farms, food rescue organizations and local pantries throughout New England. Three Squares New England has what they call “hunger relief partners” that have donated more than 4,000,000 pounds of food annually and serves more than 300,000 individuals per year. Colleges are working with organizations to rescue fresh surplus foods and deliver them to their communities. There is a collaboration with all 6 New England States to expand their own farm to institution networks to enhance collaboration within their state, the Farm to Institution New England connection.

You can help, you don’t need to join a large group or be part of a big organization. Just do a search for food pantries, soup kitchens or co-ops within your area and explore what you can do to help, even the smallest donation of food, money or time can make a big difference in someone’s life.

CMSNE Hospital Based Case Management Conference
Overcoming Challenges in Today's Landscape of Hospital-Based Case Management
Saturday, January 22 & Saturday, February 5, 2022
8 - 11 AM

All presentations offer RN, SW and CCM ethics credits.

The current landscape of hospital-based patient care has become more complex, resulting in significant challenges for case managers, the medical teams, and the patients they serve. Facilitating a safe and sustained transition of care for patients and caregivers has become even more essential to the survival of individuals living in the community, hospitals, and "systems of care." For example, assessing the capacity of the patient and caregiver can pose ethical challenges in the Case Management daily practice. Identifying and understanding complex "emotional" trauma and its potential implications for the patient's care plan is critical to the case manager's role. Lastly, conflict resolution is an essential skill in the case manager's toolbox, especially in the current healthcare environment struggling with stress and uncertainty.  This conference will provide Hospital-Based Case Managers with the strategies to quickly identify and develop care plans that effectively meet the challenges while ethically advocating and planning for the patients they serve.

Upon completion of the conference the attendees will have the knowledge to be able to:
·        Describe the criteria and potential implications for determining the mental capacity of patients and caregivers.
·        Identify strategies to facilitate sustained Transitions of Care.
·        Describe how Complex Psychological Trauma influences the patient's plan of care and treatment choices.
·        Identify effective strategies for managing dilemmas and conflict resolution of patients, families and caregivers.

Discectomy in Lumbar Disc Herniation:
Injured Workers and Patient - Webinar
Thursday, January 20, 2022 - 6:00 PM

Speaker:
Glenn P. Sanders, Ph.D.
Director, Research and Development
Intrinsic Therapeutics

Herniation is one of the most common causes of back pain. The incidence of herniated disc is estimated at 5 to 20 cases per 1000 adults annually in the US and is a significant cause of morbidity and cost. Healthcare personnel are at particular risk and face a higher incidence of injury. The severity of pain from a herniated disc can have a major impact on an injured employee's ability to work and perform tasks that involve lifting and carrying. Workers' compensation helps with medical care and expenses, therapy and rehabilitation.
Annular closure devices have emerged as a new technology to address re-herniation after lumbar discectomy and the need for reoperation. There is clinical data showing that patients with annular closure device placement have fewer re-herniations, compared to patients who did not receive the device, resulting in fewer additional surgeries. This enables patients to return to work and stay at work without the need for reoperation due to re-herniation.

Upon completion of this presentation, attendees will be able to:
  • Describe the anatomy of the spine and the pathological herniation of vertebral discs.
  • Define worker populations and others at risk for suffering herniated discs.
  • List present surgical treatments including limited discectomy and complete discectomy, noting the potential resulting problems with each.
  • State clinical trials and real-world clinical data results related to new technology.
  • Discuss the potential advantages of using new technology to prevent the risk of re-herniation and need for reoperation.
