Happy New Year!  We hope everyone had a relaxing break over the holidays.  We are excited to have your children back with us as we head into a winter filled with fantastic learning experiences and fun activities for all.
Mid-year Grading Information
As we approach the end of Semester 1, we want to explain how mid-year progress information will be communicated for students in Middle School.  Most courses at the Middle School level are full year courses, and our instruction and grading practices for these courses reflect this. Therefore, learning does not reset after each artificial "grading period" as learning and growth continues throughout the course of the full year. Gradebooks at the Middle School level for full year courses now reflect this reality.  What this means is that learning from Semester 1 and 2 will be tracked to create a final cumulative grade, and the final cumulative grade will be posted to the report card at the end of the school year. Therefore, GPA will be calculated at the end of the school year, and grades from semester long courses will also be reflected in the end of year GPA.
Learning progress is updated throughout the year, however the end of the semester is a good time to make sure you check-in on your student's progress.  You will be able to find information about where your student is at anytime in Empower and/or Parent Portal. Please click on the links below to view instructions on how to access Empower and/or Parent Portal, as well as information on how to check on your student's progress.  As always, you can contact your student's teacher for additional information on learning progress.

Volunteers Needed for the Ellis Island Simulation for 6th Graders
On Friday Jan. 25, Pioneer Ridge Middle School will be transformed into Ellis Island. On that day all 6th grade students from West and throughout the district will make their way through a series of inspectors, interviewers and doctors, trying to gain entrance into the land of opportunity - America. To make this simulation a great learning experience we need around 200 volunteers on Jan. 25 from 8:45am - 11:40am. If you are interested please click on the link below for more information and to sign up:

Lost & Found to be Donated
There are many Found items in our Lost & Found located in the Commons including coats, hats, gloves, boots, sweatshirts, water bottles, books, etc. Please have your student look for missing items there. You are welcome to come have a look too before or after school. Unclaimed items will be donated at the end of this month as our supply is overflowing!
Rock It! Concert
Friday Feb. 1 will be the Rock It! Concert at 7:30pm in the Large Gym. Join us and enjoy the wonderful musical talent of our students.

Free Food for Weekends for Families in Need
The Sheridan Story has come along side of CMSW to help consistently supply nutritious food for every weekend for families in need. At the end of each week nutritious food bags are discreetly put into student lockers to bring home. This free, confidential program has no requirements but families need to fill out the permission form in order for students to receive the bags of food. Here is a link to the form in English and the form in Spanish.

Box Tops for Education
We collect box tops to earn cash for our school. Please clip and bring them into the Main Office.

Stigma 180 Speaking Series
The District Office is offering several educational sessions on mental health starting in January and running through April. They are free and open to the public. Click here for topics, the schedule and more information.

Learn more about equity in Eastern Carver County Schools
In September, E. Carver Co. Schools hired Equity Coordinator Michelle Milstein, Ph.D. Her role is to bring greater depth and focus to the district's work to ensure schools are inclusive of all people. To promote understanding of what equity means, and to report to our community about our progress, please see more information at www.district112.org/equity.
