The entrepreneurial atmosphere in our Make City incubator is always apparent. During the COVID-19 crisis, the community of collaboration and innovation is more evident than ever before. Some of the small businesses working out of Make City and The Hatchery, whose businesses are struggling due to the current environment, have changed operations and thought of innovative ways to support their business, their employees, and their communities.

created a video series entitled
When Life Hands You Lemons
where they follow people who are turning lemons into lemonade, using their resources to help others in the face of COVID-19. The weekly series began by featuring Luckyprints who is supporting restaurants and local small businesses by creating merchandise that is sold through an online shop created by Luckyprints.

Farmer's Fridge
now serves 30,000 meals to healthcare workers each week in 140 facilities across 6 states.
They also installed “mini-fridges” in hospital break rooms and family bereavement lounges, where food is free for those in need.

Supporting Frontline Workers with Hand Sanitizer

Rhine Hall
has continued to create hand sanitizer by overproofing their brandy and using donated beer by neighbors like Goose Island. So far, Rhine Hall has donated over 130 gallons of sanitizer to 30 organizations.

Tiege Hanley
began creating hand sanitizer and used packaging from their original skincare products. The company was able to donate 36,000 ounces of hand sanitizer to the Chicago Fire Department.

Delivered Free Meals to Workers

Sunstarr Apparel
, a local business that produces Made In Chicago uniforms and work apparel, and Unah Choi, an ICNC Board Member, created more than 800 reusable cloth masks to give out to Make City tenants and Hatchery residents for free. Below is Make City tenant Shannon of Green Diaper Babies wearing the Sunstarr mask while continuing to run her essential cloth diaper service.

Chef's On The Go'Go
, a Hatchery resident, is a catering, pop-up, and now food delivery service. Polly Coleman, owner of the company, honored her late mother by delivering free meals to frontline mothers who had to work on Mother's Day. The company was recently highlighted by
NBC 5 Chicago
for their support of frontline workers.

The Hatchery is a non-profit food and beverage incubator dedicated to helping local entrepreneurs build and grow successful businesses through cutting-edge kitchen facilities, entrepreneurship curriculum, partnerships with generous corporate sponsors and foundations to create local job opportunities and accelerate local economic growth.
