New on the CNS Blog: Bring in the Laughs: Investigating Laughter as a Social Signal

For Qing Ceci Cai, a Chinese Ph.D. student at University College London, social laughter has a very personal connection. "As a Chinese student immersing in this very different British culture, I normally fail to understand British humor," she explains. "So most of the time when I hang out with my friends, I capture the exact timing to join others in laughter to show I understand what's going on." Based on these experiences using laughter as a social signal, Cai began wondering how others, including autistic people, produce and perceive laughter as a social signal. So, she led a study with Sophie Scott and Sarah White to look at differences in social processing of laughter between neurotypical and autistic people. Learn more in this Q & A with Qing Ceci Cai.

Auditory Cognitive Neuroscience

The newly formed Conscious Audition and Scene Analysis (or CASA) Lab at the University of Miami invites applications for at least two PhD positions. The CASA Lab uses multimodal neuroimaging to examine the neural basis of auditory perception and cognition. We focus particularly on how conscious auditory representations emerge from patterns of brain activity, how this affected by the presence of noise, and how such representations/patterns change across the lifespan. Our long-term goal is use the knowledge gleaned from such studies to inform the design of smarter hearing aids and diagnostic tools for patients with audiological and neurological disorders.

The lab is housed in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Miami and has access to multiple neuroimaging methods including high-density EEG, research-dedicated MRI, joint EEG-fMRI, and intracranial EEG. Collaborations that afford access to MEG as well as various clinical and aging populations are also in place.

Successful applicants will be admitted to the PhD Program in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Miami (https://bit.ly/2VggEN3) and join the budding cognitive neuroscience and neural engineering community in South Florida, which also includes Florida International and Florida Atlantic Universities. In their spare time, students can enjoy a tropical climate, diverse food and music scenes, and the distinct Latin American and Caribbean cultures that characterize Miami.

Applicants should (soon) have a Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline as well as an interest in neuroscience and/or neural engineering. Quantitative skills including programming (e.g. Python, R), signal processing, electromagnetism, and linear algebra will be considered strong assets. However, students without such skills may be afforded the opportunity to acquire them via conditional admission to the PhD Program and completion of additional coursework (see here: https://bit.ly/2XgTQOJ).

The Department of Psychology at Wesleyan University seeks to appoint, at the tenure-track Assistant Professor level, a broadly trained cognitive neuroscientist, for an appointment beginning July 1, 2020. Research focus on any area in cognitive neuroscience, including motor control, object recognition, language, memory, attention and cognitive control, and emotion is welcome. The ideal candidate will have a high quality research program that incorporates undergraduates and will be prepared to teach four courses per year: an introductory course in cognitive neuroscience, two specialized courses in an area of expertise, and one course in statistics or research methods. Additional duties include advising and mentoring students and participating in faculty governance at the departmental and university level.
 
The Department has 18 full-time faculty members in the areas of cognition, neuroscience, psychopathology, development, culture, and social psychology. Members also contribute to interdisciplinary programs in Neuroscience and Behavior, Science and Society, and Feminist, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, and participate in a postdoctoral program.

Lawrence University of Wisconsin, a selective undergraduate liberal arts college and conservatory of music located in Appleton, Wisconsin, invites applications for a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor in Cognitive Neuroscience to begin September 1, 2020. Appointment at the associate level may be considered commensurate with the candidate's experience. This person will join faculty in the psychology department and interdisciplinary Neuroscience (major/minor) and Cognitive Science (minor) programs.
We are seeking an individual who is a dedicated teacher passionate about working with undergraduate students in a liberal arts setting, an active and engaging scholar, and an effective mentor for students from diverse backgrounds. The successful candidate will develop and teach new introductory, intermediate, and upper-level courses in cognitive neuroscience, playing an instrumental role in developing curricula for our joint Cognitive and Neuroscience program. Primary duties include: teaching, assessment of student work, advising and mentoring students, collaborating with faculty on curriculum development, and related program/departmental and institutional duties. The teaching load is two courses per term for three ten-week terms a year, including participation in Lawrence's flagship Freshman Studies program approximately every third year. The Freshman Studies curriculum presents an interdisciplinary introduction to the liberal arts intended to support new students' fundamental skills as readers, writers, and thinkers.
Candidates should have the ability and desire to lead undergraduate research projects and otherwise connect scholarship with teaching. Laboratory space and start-up funds are available for establishing a research program. Candidates' research should be dedicated to understanding the neural mechanisms related to human cognition and include the collection and analysis of data on human participants. In their research statement, candidates are encouraged to discuss how their scholarship may be particularly suited to a liberal arts setting.

The Neuroplasticity & Development Lab investigates how experience shapes cognition and brain development in humans. We compare cognition in adults and children with different development experiences using techniques such as fMRI, TMS and behavioral measures. A key research direction involves working with individuals who are congenitally and late blind. We investigate visual cortex function in blindness as a window into mechanisms of brain development and plasticity in humans. The post-doctoral fellow will have an opportunity to develop her/his own research program within the mission of the laboratory. Fellows will be encouraged to take part in the intellectually rich cognitive science and neuroscience community of Johns Hopkins University.
Qualifications: A Ph.D. in Psychology, Cognitive Neuroscience or related field is required. We are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to study behavioral and neuroimaging markers of preclinical Alzheimer's disease in the Memory and Aging Program (MAP) in the Dept. of Psychiatry and Human Behavior at Brown University. 

The successful candidate will join a cognitive and translational neuroscience lab (PI: Dr. Hwamee Oh) in the MAP to study behavioral and neuroimaging markers of preclinical Alzheimer's disease and work closely with a team of experts in aging and Alzheimer's disease on integrating fMRI, MRI, PET, cognitive, genetic, and biofluid measures. 

Applicants with a Ph.D. degree in cognitive neuroscience, neuropsychology, biomedical engineering, or a relevant field are encouraged to apply. Prior experience with human neuroimaging, a strong background in cognitive neuroscience and experimental design, and familiarity with programming in relevant languages (e.g., Python, MATLAB) are desirable.

Overview 

A postdoctoral fellowship position is available at The Mind Research Network in the laboratory of Dr. Eric Claus. The candidate will work on a project that is examining neural mechanisms of behavior change in alcohol use disorders using longitudinal neuroimaging (MRI/fMRI, MEG).  

Primary responsibilities of this position include implementation of longitudinal analyses, machine learning for outcome prediction, and integration of multimodal neuroimaging data. Candidates will be expected to contribute to ongoing data analyses and will have opportunities to lead manuscripts and grant applications. Because of the collaborative nature of this project, the candidate will also have opportunities to work with other investigators at MRN and the University of New Mexico (including Drs. Katie Witkiewitz, Jon Houck, and Barbara McCrady). 

Qualifications 

Requires a PhD in a related discipline (e.g., neuroscience, psychology, statistics, electrical engineering, computer science) and experience conducting neuroimaging analyses.  

The successful candidate will have demonstrated effectiveness and experience working as part of a large research team, as well as success performing independent research projects of varying scope. This position requires superior professional-level verbal and written communication skills which are required to effectively perform in the role, as well as excellent judgment, and problem-solving and decision-making skills.

Preferred/Additional Qualifications 

Experience using R/python and major neuroimaging packages (FSL, SPM, AFNI) is preferred. Prior experience with longitudinal modeling is preferred, but not required.

Overview 

Postdoctoral Fellow positions in data sciences in Dr. Kent Kiehl's laboratory are currently available at The Mind Research Network. The position is located in sunny Albuquerque, New Mexico.  

Duties include working with a diverse research team on several grant funded studies examining the cognitive and neural systems underlying psychopathy, substance abuse, and related illnesses. We are also actively contributing to the emerging field of neuroprediction of future behavior. Candidates with a broad range of skills, including programming in Matlab, Python, and R are encouraged to apply. Machine learning/deep learning training is also useful but additional training will be available.  

The position includes access to the world's largest forensic neuroscience data set - over 4000 offenders from a wide variety of security levels ranging from minimum security all the way to super-max. The postdoctoral fellow will have ample opportunities to write manuscripts from this data set and incorporate new ideas.  

Applicants with publications in graduate school will be most competitive.

Qualifications 

Requires a Ph.D. in psychology, neuroscience, computer science or related field and two years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities have been attained. Those with experience and interest in genetics, and/or substance abuse are strongly encouraged to apply.

Must have Matlab and programming experience.

Overview 

A forensic clinical/cognitive neuroscience postdoctoral research position is currently available in Dr. Kent Kiehl's laboratory at The Mind Research Network and the Department of Psychology at the University of New Mexico. The position is located in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Qualifications 

Requires a Ph.D. or M.D. in psychology, neuroscience, or related field is required. Those with experience and interest in neuroprediction, particularly the use of brain and behavioral measures to predict outcomes (e.g., relapse to substance abuse and/or criminal behavior) are strongly encouraged to apply.

This opportunity includes access the world's largest multimodal forensic database including structural and functional MRI, genetics, and clinical assessment data on over 3500 offenders.

All candidates should possess a strong interest (and preferably experience) working with incarcerated populations, a strong background in research, and experience coordinating research projects. Duties include working with a research team on several grant funded studies examining the cognitive and neural systems underlying psychopathy, substance abuse, and related illnesses. Experience with clinical assessment training is preferred. Expertise in research design and statistical analysis of longitudinal outcomes data is highly desirable.

Expectations involve analysis of existing data and preparation of manuscripts for dissemination of research (topics flexible), development of new research protocols, and submitting applications for independent grant funding (NRSA fellowships or similar). Qualified hires will also receive training in functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data collection and analyses. Other duties include but are not limited to performing clinical assessments in incarcerated populations, literature analyses, setting and implementing timelines for projects, recruiting healthy subjects/patients, and organizing data. Position will include access to the MRN Mobile Imaging System that is deployed to local and out-of-state prisons. 

Salary will be commensurate with experience.

Overview 

An image processing and algorithm development postdoctoral position is currently available in Dr. Kent Kiehl's laboratory at The Mind Research Network in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The postdoctoral fellow will be responsible for developing advanced and novel computational tools for the analysis of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data, and will assist in the design and implementation of computer data systems including establishing coding formats for future research data collection. Will also evaluate the quality and validity of collected MRI data using statistical analysis tools, and will recommend additional tests and/or modifications to validate data. 

The postdoctoral fellow will be responsible for the development or selection of proper statistic tests, algorithms and methods, training research staff/students in using software packages for the analysis of MRI data such as SPM, AFNI and FSL, and developing new ideas that promote current research.

This opportunity includes access to the world's largest multimodal forensic database including structural and functional MRI, genetics, and clinical assessment data on over 3500 criminal offenders. The postdoctoral fellow will work on several federally-funded projects with a large and dynamic research team.

Qualifications 

Requires a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering, Neuroscience, Computational Neuroscience, Computer Science or related field with 2 years of experience in the field, or an equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been attained. Requires knowledge of programming languages (e.g. Matlab, Python, R, C, C++), algorithm development, multivariate association statistics, and scientific manuscript writing skills.

Preference will be given to candidates who are familiar with neuroanatomy, neurophysiology and neuroimaging techniques and analyses. Overview 

A post-doctoral research position is currently available in Dr. Andrew Mayer's laboratory at The Mind Research Network, Albuquerque, New Mexico location in the area of cognitive neuroscience. The candidate will work on several projects that use multimodal neuroimaging to study traumatic brain injury and psychosis spectrum disorders.

The primary responsibilities of this postdoctoral fellow (postdoc) will be to perform independent research in the area of image processing and algorithm development with application to brain imaging and genetics data. The position will also involve interacting with patients from various clinical populations and healthy controls. The postdoc will be responsible for the development or selection of proper statistic tests, algorithms and methods, as well as developing new ideas that promote current research. The postdoc will be expected to publish the findings in peer-review journals and over time to compete for extramural funding.

Qualifications 

Requires a PhD in a related discipline and a minimum of 2 years of research work performing related duties.

Experience with R/Python programming is required and experience with neuroimaging software (e.g., AFNI, FSL, etc.) is preferred. Most of the projects involve analyses of multi-modal data in a multi-disciplinary setting, i.e. studying the relationship between functional and structural MRI images, from populations of healthy individuals and individuals with clinical disorders. Basic skills needed for the projects are programming, multivariate association statistics, and scientific manuscript writing.

Must be able to work independently as well as part of a team, and possess excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Our focus is studying and improving human cognition in different subject populations. Under the supervision of the Principal Investigator (PI), the Assistant Clinical Research Coordinator (Assistant CRC) will perform duties related to the support and coordination of research: screening, enrollment, and tracking of research participants; preparation of experiment materials and protocols; collection of data using a variety of techniques, including fMRI, EEG, TMS, and behavioral testing; and assisting with the maintenance of our participant database. The Assistant CRC will participate in data analysis under academic supervision and will work alongside a team of staff and volunteers. The employee is expected to attend regular meetings with the supervisor and other team members.

The Assistant CRC may work with research participants who are minors. There may be additional training required per UCSF policy, such as the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act (CANRA). Study activities with minors will either take place on-site in the lab at UCSF or off-site, such as at local schools.

Research Assistant Position

We are seeking a full-time Research Assistant (RA) who will assist cognitive neuroscience and neuroimaging studies of aging and Alzheimer's disease (50%) and Alzheimer's disease prevention registry (50%) in the Memory and Aging Program at Butler Hospital and the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior of Brown University. 

The responsibilities for neuroimaging studies (50%) will include: Prepare and run behavioral and fMRI experiments, schedule and consent participants for imaging studies, assist with analysis and management of MRI, PET, fMRI behavioral, and neuropsychological data, compile and communicate study results, and maintain accurate and timely documentation/lab protocols. 

The responsibilities for Alzheimer's disease prevention registry studies (50%) will include: Review and screen new registrants in the Butler Hospital Alzheimer's Prevention Registry, schedule and consent participants for Registry sub-studies, including cognitive screening, APOE genotyping, and blood specimen banking, and work with registrants to complete online questionnaires and collect missing data points. The RA will also assist with coordination and recruitment from community based events and screening of potential study participants.

The successful applicant should have BS or BA in Psychology, Biology, Neuroscience, Computer Science, or closely related field, and demonstrate familiarity with programming languages (e.g., Python, Unix, R), statistical software (e.g., SPSS, SAS), and database management software (e.g., REDcap).
