President's Message

Happy October!

The Central New York Women's Bar Association (“CNYWBA”), a chapter of the Women's Bar Association of the State of New York, has been very busy these past few months gearing up for an exciting fall.

Last week, the CNYWBA hosted its 42nd annual judicial reception, at the Marriott Hotel. The event, which was attended by a record number of people from the judiciary and legal profession, provided the Bar an opportunity to meet judicial candidates, announce the ratings of our judicial screening committee, and mingle with esteemed members of the judiciary.

At the judicial reception, the CNYWBA also presented its 7th Annual Karen DeCrow Award to Colleen M. Gibbons, Esq., who, as noted by past president Annaleigh Porter, Esq., embodies Karen’s spirit, and is likewise “tireless, thoughtful, and creative” in her pursuit of justice.

The CNYWBA again extends its heartfelt gratitude to the many generous sponsors of the reception, that made the event possible.

In September, the CNYWBA was also a proud sponsor of the NYSBA WIL’s Lunch and Learn Series on the New York Equal Rights Amendment, held at the Syracuse College of Law. The Lunch and Learn Series featured incredible panelists including the CNYWBA’s own Kim Wolf Price, Esq.!

As you all know, October marks breast cancer awareness month, and the CNYWBA is looking forward to participating in the Making Strides of Syracuse walk on October 20th, presented by Upstate Cancer Center. We invite you to join and/or donate to our team, Legally Pink, to help the American Cancer Society fund cancer research, patient support, and advocacy efforts to end breast cancer.

This month, the CNYWBA is also pleased to support ARRIBA’s Hispanic/Latine Heritage Month Celebration, with a panel discussion featuring Hon. Michael Lopez, Hon. Maria Cubillos Reed, and Hon. Ramon Rivera, on October 10th from 4-630p, at the CNY Philanthropy Center. Please join us!

Finally, as a professional association comprised of lawyers, judges, law professors, and law students, the CNYWBA encourages its members to become civically engaged and commends those who volunteer their valuable time to make a difference. This month, please consider participating in a voter registration drive with the League of Women Voters of the Syracuse Metropolitan Area. The flyer below contains information on how to register and, if you do, please let us know because you will be entered in a raffle for a small prize.

Heading into fall, we remind you of our organization’s great mission, which is to “promote justice for all, regardless of sex, in all phases of the study, practice, and application of the law, to ascertain and advance the social, economic, and legal status of women through the law, to expand opportunities for women for advancement in the field of law, and to raise the level of competence and integrity in the legal profession.”

Samantha C. Riggi, Esq.

President

Syracuse University recently put out an article on how Syracuse faculty contribute to the vibrancy of Latine Heritage Month, featuring the CNYWBA's incredible Suzette Meléndez.

Meléndez, a professor at the College of Law, has done "trailblazing work in family law, domestic violence and the delivery of legal services to women and children," and help put Syracuse "on the multicultural map while giving a voice to marginalized communities."

In the article, Meléndez explains that the U.S. Latine community is a "'mosaic, not a monolith.'"
