Confidential Law Clerk for Supreme Court Justice

Law Clerk to the Honorable Danielle M. Fogel, J.S.C., Supervising Judge for Supreme Court, 5th Judicial District


Salary grade: JG-531, hiring rate $130,061

Location: Onondaga County Supreme Court, Syracuse, N.Y.

Start date: May 2025

Position Summary: Justice Fogel is seeking a highly motivated, detail-oriented Law Clerk to provide legal research, analysis, and support on a variety of civil matters.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct legal research on complex legal issues and provide well-organized, written memoranda and analyses.
  • Prepare draft decisions, orders, and bench memoranda.
  • Provide assistance in managing caseloads, including scheduling and correspondence.
  • Communicate with attorneys, parties, and court staff as necessary. Conduct court conferences.

Qualifications:

  • J.D. degree from an accredited law school.
  • Strong legal research and writing skills.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency in legal research tools (e.g., Westlaw, LexisNexis).

CITY OF SYRACUSE

Assistant Corporation Counsel--Litigation


The City of Syracuse Office of Corporation Counsel is seeking a litigation attorney to handle complex civil litigation in state and federal court on behalf of the City and its employees. The attorney will have the opportunity to defend a wide variety of claims involving personal injury, property damage, contract disputes, employment relations, general liability and more. Additionally, the attorney will be representing the interests of the City and the general public through bringing affirmative claims and special proceedings. The attorney will work collaboratively our integrated litigation team through all phases of litigation, including discovery, motion practice and trials.

The successful candidate must have excellent analytical, writing and oral advocacy skills, a strong adherence to professional ethics and must be able to handle a heavy caseload. The successful candidate will demonstrate a desire to effect change through government service.

The Office of Corporation Counsel offers a supportive, collegial environment without the pressures of billable hours and client marketing. Attorneys get courtroom and trial experience early on and are given wide autonomy to manage cases while benefiting from a team approach.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Must be admitted to the New York bar. Ideal candidates will possess at least 3-5 years of litigation experience. Those with fewer years but commensurate experience related to litigation—such as internships, clinics, clerkships or employment—may also be considered.

Salary range: $100,000 - $120,000

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

The City of Syracuse’s Parking Violations Bureau handles parking ticket disputes and hearings. The Hearing Examiner will conduct administrative hearings of charges of traffic infractions which constitute parking violations, statutory violations and fee disputes. Candidates for this role should demonstrate a passion for public service. Candidates should also have a proven track-record of successful mediation and be able to communicate effectively with diverse groups of people in a variety of situations. This position reports to the Director and Supervising Hearing Examiner of the Parking Violations Bureau.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

  • Conduct hearings and proceedings regarding matters relating to charges of parking violations, statutory violations and fee disputes.
  • Render decisions and issue determination or order imposing civil fines penalties.
  • Hear administrative appeals and render decisions.

FULL PERFORMANCE, KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS

  • Thorough knowledge of state and local vehicle and traffic law(s) and other applicable laws and regulations;
  • Through knowledge of administrative law and procedures;
  • Ability to organize materials for hearings;
  • Ability to conduct administrative hearings and appeals;
  • Ability to get along and work well with others;
  • Ethical conduct in the practice of law in the State of New York; and
  • Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates shall be attorneys in good standing, admitted to practice in the state of New York for at least six (6) years.
