More CO₂ = More Food

Have you seen our latest video, CO2 and Food? We are working with Emmy Award-winning producer Tye Murphy and member Mike Thompson to produce a compelling series of short films that provide the truth about our changing climate.

It has been well documented that more CO₂ directly benefits plant growth. Many thousands of peer-reviewed studies have backed up this conclusion. Research has also shown that increased CO₂ helps plants resist drought, extreme heat, pollution and other environmental stresses.

Below is a chart showing the top eight crops produced in the world (by tons). The data reveal that these important crops are breaking production records nearly every year.

According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), corn is the largest component of the global grain trade, and the United States is the world’s largest producer. The chart below shows U.S. corn production over the last 60 years and compares it to temperature (red) and atmospheric CO₂ (blue). The stunning and steady increase of corn yield is marching in lockstep with increases in both temperature and carbon dioxide. Not shown is the third driver of crop growth: nitrogen fertilizer.
