Critical Thinking: The Skill Behind Every Smart Choice

Critical Thinking, a key NACE Career Competency, is a valuable skill to have in the workplace when there aren't often clear "right answers" for solving problems. Employers value individuals who can break down complex problems, identify what information is relevant (and what isn’t), and make sound judgments even when data is incomplete. This skill also helps professionals avoid common pitfalls such as bias, groupthink, or overreliance on automated tools.

In addition, critical thinking enhances other key career competencies like communication and teamwork. When you can clearly explain why you made a decision, you contribute more effectively to group discussions, build credibility with colleagues, and help teams reach better outcomes. Leaders, in particular, depend on critical thinking to weigh risks, anticipate consequences, and guide organizations through uncertainty.
