NACE Career Readiness Competency: Self-Development
Feedback is Fuel - How to Use Criticism to Grow
This month, we're highlighting the NACE Career Readiness Competency: Self-Development, with a focus on how feedback can support your personal and professional growth.
As an undergraduate preparing for internships, jobs, or grad school, learning to accept and apply constructive criticism can give you a real edge. While it's normal to feel uneasy about feedback, the most successful professionals know that growth comes from learning, not perfection.
Here are five practical ways to turn feedback into progress:
-
Listen without defensiveness - Stay open and focus on understanding, not reacting.
-
Reflect objectively - What is the feedback really about: your performance, communication, or collaboration?
-
Make a plan - Turn insight into action with clear goals.
-
Follow up - Show you're serious about improvement by checking in with the person who provided you with feedback to share progress or ask for guidance.
-
Seek feedback regularly - Don't wait--ask for input often to keep growing.
Next time someone offers feedback, lean in. Use it as a tool to improve, grow, and set yourself apart--in college and beyond.
