NACE Career Readiness Competency: Communication
Communicating About Your Future Over Thanksgiving Break
Thanksgiving break is a great time to reset, but it can also bring those classic questions: “Do you have a job?” “Grad school?” “What are you doing with your major?” If you’re not sure how to answer, that’s okay. This is a chance to practice strong communication skills—a key NACE career competency.
Here are a few simple ways to respond while keeping the conversation positive:
If you're exploring options:
- “I am learning more about different career paths and doing things to figure out what I can do with my major.”
If you want to highlight what you’re learning:
- “I am really enjoying a class where we are talking about X, Y, and Z—it’s helping me see new possibilities."
If you're early in your search:
- “I am starting to look at internships and experiences that connect to what I am studying.”
You don’t need all the answers—just the ability to communicate where you are and what you are working toward. Break is the perfect time to practice that.
