NACE Career Readiness Competency: Technology

Technology is woven into every aspect of today's business world--driving efficiency, innovation, and success across industries. That's why the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) lists Technology as one of the key Career Readiness Competencies.

In a competitive job market, being skilled in a range of technologies helps you stand out. Here are two accessible ways to strengthen your technology competency:

  1. Free Online Courses – Take advantage of your free access to LinkedIn Learning, which offers thousands of expert-led courses. Earn badges to showcase on your LinkedIn profile and resume.
  2. Use Workplace Technologies – Start using Microsoft Office Suite, which is available for free to JMU students. These tools are widely used among professionals.

As you begin applying for internships and jobs, consider what technologies employers rely on to streamline their workflows. This is also a great question to ask employers in-person at the upcoming University Career Fair. Asking about the tools they use can show initiative and help you align your skills more closely with industry needs.
