 Students learn from each other in 'Art For Life'
Brie Medina has a passion for art and education and after earning undergraduate degrees in visual art and women's studies, she is now seeking a master's degree in art education from Florida State University. "I'm interested in the transformative aspect of art education, the impact art can have on a kid's life, and how they can use art to change their communities and their world."
Medina's introduction to the graduate program is a class called "Art for Life," taught by assistant professor Rachel Fendler. "We try and center art education as a tool for social justice and as a way to make a difference. We use the term 'art for life' to reference that," explained Fendler.
Graduate students in FSU's art education program are focused on becoming effective art teachers and they've recently been given a new opportunity to put what they're learning into practice.
Raa Middle School houses an arts magnet program and five years ago they developed a specialized arts mentoring program in partnership with the Council on Culture & Arts. Local visual artists, musicians, dancers, and theater professionals serve as mentors to Raa's arts magnet students, providing them with a deeper exploration of the arts.
Traditionally, FSU's "Art for Life" class did not have a field component and Fendler was seeking a way to increase her graduate students' contact hours with school-aged students. "When I heard about the arts mentoring program, I thought this would be a good low-stakes environment to start making art with kids."

 FAAE Leadership Awards (Deadline: April 15)
The Florida Alliance for Arts Education welcomes nominations for the FAAE Leadership Awards. These awards are designed to recognize leadership among individuals and organizations who work in various capacities to ensure that high-quality arts education is available to all Florida students. Leadership in the areas of education, administration, and community are recognized. Award recipients will be recognized in an awards ceremony held during the FAAE Summit at the Riverside Hotel on Las Olas in Fort Lauderdale, FL June 20-22, 2019. The STAR program is designed to honor and nourish the artist in the educator by providing five public school educators from Florida with the opportunity to pursue their artistic work in the inspiring environment of the prestigious Hermitage Artist Retreat. U.S. Rep. Al Lawson Hosts 2019 Congressional Art Competition
(Deadline: April 15)
U.S. Rep. Al Lawson (FL-05) is now accepting submissions for the 2019 Congressional Art Competition. This annual art contest, held by members of the U.S. House of Representatives, highlights the creative talents of students in each of the congressional districts.The competition is open to students in grades 7-12. Winners from each congressional district will receive two tickets to fly to Washington, D.C., to attend a congressional reception and see the unveiling of their artwork in the U.S. Capitol. The artwork will remain on display in the U.S. Capitol for one year, where it may be viewed by the millions of visitors. The winning artwork will also be featured on the U.S. House's
Congressional Art Competition webpage.

 Kids Go for B'roque Auditions (April 17)
The Tallahassee Bach Parley Kids Go for B'roque concert is an honors recital featuring musicians 18 years old and younger, who are currently studying with a music teacher, playing pieces of the Baroque period, 1600-1750. Strings, winds, pianists, vocalists, guitarists, and small chamber ensembles are welcome to audition. A panel of 3 judges will select those students who will perform on the concert. Congrats to everyone involved in the annual Chalk Walk and Arts Day celebration at the state capitol. More than 200 students and teachers participated from area public and private schools including Florida State University School, Maclay, Leon, Rickards, Godby, Chiles, Lincoln, SAIL, Raa, Montford, and Trinity Catholic School. Students created chalk art and performed during this arts advocacy event to show our state lawmakers the power of the arts.
