 Animal encounters shape art lessons at museum camp
"Where do you think you'd find charcoal," asked Maddie Domning, summer camp teacher at the Tallahassee Museum. Several tiny hands popped up. One camper offered "a fire," another added "a firepit." One impressive young camper answered, "a controlled burn." As part of the review, the kindergarten - first grade campers shared their drawings made with charcoal.
Artwork subject matter ranged from portraits of turtles and a fearsome lynx to landscapes and an architectural rendering of the Bellevue house, a historic building at the Tallahassee Museum. This was just one of many engaging activities offered to kids during the week-long art camp.
Domning said, "we focus on history and science here and this week's camp interweaves art making. We center the artworks around nature and animals." Though this is Domning's first year as a summer camp teacher, she attended similar camps as a kid.
As a recent college graduate with a degree in special education, she understands that this multi-disciplinary approach gives campers a "unique chance to apply what they've learned. When they're creating something, they have a different connection and understanding."
The Tallahassee Museum offers a wide variety of camps, each with a different theme.
The art camp begins with an exploration of the museum's animal exhibits, historic buildings and natural scenery. Each day campers participate in "animal encounters," where they can observe animals in their natural habitats and look closely at their coloring, anatomy and movements.

 Campers tune up performance skills at Next Step
Isabella Hanselman has big dreams. She sees herself on Broadway one day but, in the meantime, she knows she has to hone her skills. Millie Seckel, owner of The Next Step Performing Arts Studio is helping her do just that. Currently, Isabella and a dozen other campers are preparing for a summer extravaganza of Disney favorites.
"I like the Lion King's 'Can You Feel the Love Tonight' dance and the Disney princess scenes," said 10-year-old Isabella. "I've learned a bunch of stuff like breathing while you're singing."
Students not only work on singing, acting and dancing, they also help build sets, design sound and lighting, and make costumes and props.
Seckel believes her students all deserve contemporary technical and performance based hands-on training. "That's what I'm here for. That's why I call it 'the next step.' I want to prepare them as much as possible for whatever comes next," she said.
Seckel's training in the performing arts goes back to her own childhood in Tallahassee. By the time she was 18, she was working as a theater professional for a Pennsylvania production company, workshopping new shows headed to Broadway. "I got all the training in the world. I grew up real fast. I did my thing, then came back home to be home."
In the 36 years that have passed, she has worked as a choreographer, director and educator all over the area, most notably at Leon and Godby high schools.

 COCA Spotlight: COCA's new director buzzes with creative energy
July 29, 2019
Feeling electrified, Kathleen Spehar witnessed transformative energy fill St. Catherine University's O'Shaughnessy Auditorium. As she watched a folk opera unfold onstage, the powerful lyrics and melodic harmonies led her to consider the effects of live performances and how exposure to the arts can strengthen a community.
"It captured me and made me understand how I want to share my life through the arts," reflects Spehar. "I want to lead communities to engage more with art and help artists with the work that they do. Through the arts, imagine the impact we can have as a community when we work together towards a common goal."
Spehar will serve as the Council on Culture & Arts' new Executive Director starting this August. Aspirations like these serve as the foundation of her leadership approach. Spehar began her career as a K-12 classroom teacher with a knack for organizing festivals and leading arts integration within schools.

 "Creating Connections" Call for Art (Submission Deadline: Sept. 15)
Arts4All Florida is proud to announce our next Call for Art for a new exhibition titled "Creating Connections". "Creating Connections" will focus on how art connects us to people, places, times, and abilities. The exhibition will have two categories (youth and adults) and three cash prizes in each category. 2020 Embracing Our Differences International Art Exhibit Celebrating Diversity (Deadline: Oct. 8)
Embracing Our Differences invites you to participate in creating a world where differences are embraced and individuality is celebrated. Become a part of this exciting change through your visual art submission to the annual Embracing Our Differences international juried competition. The statements accompanying each artwork are also vital and provide insight into our common humanity-as well as the differences that make us all unique. The winning artworks combine a deep understanding of both medium and message. Awards are given for "Best-in-Show Adult," "Best-in-Show Student," and "People's Choice" categories, with the last chosen by visitors to the exhibit. Adult winners each receive $1,000; students receive $1,000 with $500 to be directed to the student and $500 to their school's art program, if they worked under the direction of an educator.

Tallahassee Community College is currently looking for a dance instructor for the Fall 2019 semester. There are two sections available. Contemporary Dance is scheduled on Monday and Wednesday from 2:30 - 3:45. Ballet is scheduled on Tuesday and Thursday from 2:00 - 3:15. Sixteenth century Italian artist Giuseppe Arcimboldo had an imaginative take on portraits. He created composite heads composed of flowers, fruits, and other inanimate objects-that have defined his legacy.
His "Reversibles" take the playfulness to a new level by flipping the paintings, literally, on their heads. At first glance, these pieces look like a still life, a bowl of vegetables for instance. But linger on their legumes and you'll see a face, upside down, with a bowl as a hat.
Art historians believed that Arcimboldo painted these pieces as still life, right side up. Then he would turn them to see their faces and adjust accordingly. X-rays of the canvases reveal that this required some shifting of positions and repainting of fruit to get everything just right.
