 10-year-old violinist's advice: 'Just have fun'
If Kye Richardson's violin could talk, he imagines it would be a strict disciplinarian, instructing him to practice often and play well. What about while in front of a crowd, as Richardson was as one of the winners of the Big Bend Community Orchestra Concerto Competition last February?
"I would imagine it saying, 'I hope you enjoy the music,'" quips Richardson.
The 10-year-old virtuoso followed up his win at BBCO's 2018 competition with another first prize award this past January at Tallahassee Youth Orchestra's Concerto Competition. Kye was looking forward to performing with TYO in concert this May, but the performance has been postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Kye started on the violin four years ago under the instruction of Dr. Valerie Arsenault. While his classes at Gilchrist Elementary School have gone virtual, he still adheres to a practice schedule that includes extracurricular online lessons from his current teacher, professor Corrine Stillwell. Before the pandemic, Richardson had just started learning viola in his elementary school string class, and says he enjoyed lending a hand to his fellow fifth graders.

 NAfME 2020 Student Songwriters Competition (Deadline: May 15)
The National Association for Music Education is seeking original music by student songwriters for featured performance at the 2020 NAfME National Conference. Teachers and students are invited to submit original student songs for the All-National Honor Modern Band. Cash prizes will be awarded to winners and honorable mentions.
Up to ten selected composers will receive cash awards. All entrants will receive written evaluations of their compositions.

This program amplifies the voices of emerging artists with career development and professional empowerment. The competition seeks excellent work from emerging artists with disabilities, ages 16-25, residing in the United States. VSA
invites artists to consider the intersections and combinations of their creative process and disability identity. In art, the juxtaposition of ideas can blur distinctions
or reveal something new.

Digital Media Room
The Florida Alliance for Arts Education and the Interactive Academy are making digital online platforms available to the arts community in an effort to restore some of the loss of revenue organizations are experiencing during the COVID 19 outbreak.
Learners of all ages will be able to take classes that are streamed to the privacy of your personal Digital Media Room (DMR). Instructional aides such as handouts and quizzes will also be available in the DMR. To learn

 Managing Stress from Home (May 6)
This workshop is designed to impart basic tools, tips, and aids to participants to help them navigate current mandates to shelter in place or stay home. Participants will learn tactics and best practices for communicating with others when stress is high across the board. The instructor will cover creating new routines, managing child and elder care, keeping work/life balance in harmony, and maintaining productivity and positivity for those new to working from home.  FAAE Announces New Dates for Annual Summit (September 18-20)
The Florida Alliance for Arts Education is glad to inform you that the 2020 Annual Leadership Summit will not be cancelled. This gathering for professional development, award celebrations, and collaborations will still be held at the Westin Cape Coral at Marina Village (5951 Silver King Boulevard, Cape Coral, FL 33914). All gathering areas are spacious, and safety measures will be put into place. At this time, many FSU students are preparing for the summer semester or graduation. Some university programs require students to gain formative experience in order to graduate, which is why FSU has encouraged students to pursue remote-based internship opportunities during this online learning period until it is safe to return to internship sites. Kids Go for B'roque is an educational competition featuring musicians 18 years old and younger, currently studying with a music teacher, playing pieces of the Baroque period, 1600-1750. Strings, winds, pianists, vocalists, guitarists, and small chamber ensembles are welcome to audition. Rattle Seeks Submissions By Children for their annual Young Poets Anthology-poets must be age 15 or younger. Poems may be submitted by the poet, or by the poet's parent/legal guardian, or teacher.  2020 Internship at The Grove Museum
The Grove Museum is pleased to announce that it is now accepting applications for fall semester internships. We are seeking undergraduate and graduate interns from a diverse range of academic backgrounds, including history, museum studies, the humanities, and the social sciences, to spend 12 weeks working and learning at the museum. COCA congratulates Miguel Morales, Trinity Catholic School 5th grader! He was selected as one of 330 young
musicians
from around the world to be part of a Virtual Youth Orchestra. The ensemble performed an orchestral version of the Sky Sports News theme.
The familiar music has been the backdrop to all of the breaking sports news but has never been reproduced by such a global effort, with youngsters from the United Kingdom, the United States, France, Denmark, Japan, South Africa, Canada, United Arab Emirates, Ghana and Nigeria taking part in the recording.
